There is a band called "Menswear"?

After a few drinks you could easily confuse them with Manowar.

I remember that shit. So bad. Still sounds like Reign In Blood compered to Manowar, obviously.

Another brilliant post by Clint.

I might withdraw my "they've nailed it" comment after a few more listens to "Once More Round The Sun". I've noticed a few things about it that really aren't working for me.

Which parts dont work for you?

Finally got around to the new one. Gave it a couple of listens today and enjoyed it. Haven't ever given their other stuff a fair go, so will pretty soon. Anyway, the new one is good. Not ready to fist it yet, but it's a good album.

I really liked the first few listens. Could quite possibly be a 5 and an AOTY contender for me. I've enjoyed it very much so far. I haven't listened to that much Mastodon in the past, so can't really compare it to their other albums.

I love that song! But maybe not on a perfect album, it may get tiring.

I'm pretty sure you're right. Just couldn't think of a proper 'Myr-like' response. I'm dense like that. Too many head injuries I suppose.

I like Leviathan and Blood Mountain. I can't really remember the others.

Pretty much all of it. Couple of catchy choruses and tidy parts fooled me at first (thinking the rest would come..), but now that they're doing this Bullet For My Valentine type stuff (seriously, check that comparison the fuck out), they're in league with the big boys and they don't have the pop skills or anything like a unique selling point in the songwriting area.

Why that matters is that they had loads of other things going on that I used to like them for that they're now apparently above. In favour of distinctly average pop rock music, which you can find better examples of with a lazy rifle through a copy of Kerrang!. That isn't snarky, that is true. They've put themselves into an arena that they don't measure up in and the album to me sounds really, really, really, really naive.

It sounds like it's a matter of principle for me, but it is the conclusion I have drawn from the way the music made me feel, which is that the record was kinda pointless. It's not TERRIBLE, but somehow pointless/boring is even worse.

I like it, but i get where you are coming from.

To me Mastodon really peaked with the first few albums. The last 3 have been more 'commercial', and I find them less satisfying on the whole because the vocals just aren't strong enough for my taste.

They should have Dailor doing is crazy ass drumming and a good vocalist and people who can write coherent songs, so basically sack the other three.

I've gone off every band that have gone down the more noodly/proggy vibe.

Mastodon along with Kylesa and Baroness.

I still think the new album is great. Woke up with the chorus to Motherload in my head and have listened to the album a few times today. That and Surgical Steel are the only metal albums that have caught my attention in ages.

The Motherload live on some U.S. talk show:

I have yet to come across a live Mastodon performance where the vocals weren't total shit. This song is great on the album, but they really shouldn't record tracks they can't pull off onstage.
