They took all their strengths and replaced them with their weaknesses and all you knobbers still lap it up.

They peaked early, which is deeply unfortunate. in the mid 00's they seemed like one of the best bands going, and certainly had a bright future ahead of them.

Like Opeth, their greatest skill is also their biggest weakness: they can mix different sounds and styles effortlessly into the Mastodon sound without compromising their identity. Ironically, just like Opeth, it begins to sound samey, no matter how many different ideas they throw at us.

I must confess that as good as 'Leviathan' was/is, i was slightly disappointed at the time, but nothing could prepare me for how bland they would eventually become.

I hope the new album proves me wrong.

Fuck that shit, Mastodon, Baroness and now Kylesa.

I want fucking riffs.

None of those bands sound particularly psychedelic to me and they are all boring as fuck.

Baroness are one of the most overhyped metal bands of the last 5 years or so in my view. They have some good tunes but the praise is way over the top.

If they hit their stride 8-10 years earlier i may have been more enamored with them i suppose.

Timing is crucial.

The 3 EPs (or 2 and a half, as the third one was a split) are great, the albums are all dull as dishwater.[/broken record]

I loved 'Yellow & Green'. Played the goshdarn out of it. I had no idea I would like it that much. It's difficult to say why I like it, which I don't usually find too hard to do. It captured a moment, like Deftones' 'Saturday Night Wrist' did at the time of its release.

Having said that, were I familiar with the Pitchforky indie stuff it's supposedly derivative of (which I'm still not), I guess I might not have been into it.

This, to be sure. I was never on board with BARONESS, but the other two made their mark with a FOUNDATION of riffs. They could, and still occasionally do, grow into these other things and keep the the riff starved fed, but they just get too far up change's backside. Troy can't sing worth a god damn live either. He should be so much better these days, but he seems to be getting worse. Terrible when Brann Dailor is your strongest live vocalist.

Yes, it's good. Sounds to me like a mixture of the last 2 albums' styles.
