Post Hell Awaits v Ride the Lightning
I'm sure everyone is sure of their place in the Puppets / RIB argument, but what about those second albums?

To me Ride the Lightning is the weakest of the first three Metallica albums, not because of 'Escape' in fact I think that's a great song. But 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' is just boring and 'FFWF' is a bit amateur on the vocals. The instrumental is a bit meh as well. And the production is lacking the energy and space that made Kill Em All so exciting.

Hell Awaits also suffers from a poor(ish) production, if only they could have re-captured the electric sound evident on Haunting the Chapel. Sure 'Hardening of the Arteries' is a bit throwaway, but most of the rest is classic Slayer.

I have to give this to Slayer.

RTL by a zillion miles - no contest. RTL was an absolute landmark in thrash metal and perhaps the best thing Metallica ever did. hell Awaits is awesome but it's the sound of a band still maturing...

You don't think RTL is a trial run for Master?

I agree with Mark. "Ride The Lightning" gets this pretty comfortably. Saying that "Ride The Lightning" was a trial run for "Master Of Puppets" is a massive stretch.

In some ways MOP is a lazy effort - a more polished & slightly tweaked version of RTL. I love MOP - but it didn't break the boundaries that RTL did. The latter was an absolute statement that thrash metal was a mature genre - in the same way as say....Sabbath Bloody Sabbath showed critics that metal had come of age...

You just have to go with sentiment when things are so monumental like this, so it's RTL for me (despite "Escape").

Badly phrased, obviously. I really meant that since everyone loves MOP so much isn't RTL just a rougher round the edges version of that. Personally I'd still take KEA over either.

I like it too. It's not terrible at all. It was just the only time they had dipped to 3 fists thus far.

HA for me....the serious onslaught of riffs and tunes full of hellish atmosphere make it my favorite Slayer album. Never enjoyed RTL that much to be honest.

Creeping Death is a four minute song stretched to 6 for no good reason as well.

Any second spent on "Creeping death" is time well spent.

Woah, woah woah. No way. RTL is by far and away Metallica's best album and the reasons are that all the songs a brilliant, the vocals are perhaps the best Hetfield ever got in terms of vibe if not technical ability, and the production is light years better than KEA [and MOP, come to that]. The whole album just has this vibe that no other Metallica record has, it sounds like the cover looks, if that makes sense.

MOP may be more developed and mature in terms of songwriting and technicality, but RTL has the feel and the vibe, and that's what counts for me.

Agreed. They never sounded as vital again.

Crazy talk from the pair of you. KEA is a good record but RTL is a quantum leap ahead in terms of quality, production, everything.

I've never really felt that inclined to listen to KEA much, compared to their 1984-96 work.

You have to remember that I bought KEA on release, aged 13, so it has a special place in my heart. I can't view it objectively. Maybe I would feel differently if I got into them later?

I like Escape too, also the Pina Colada song. RTL!
