Its difficult to select a single album out of Maiden's discography as their absolute best, so bear with me if the general consensus doesn't support my pick. With both bands playing their fastest on these albums, which album wins it for you as the better choice in terms of songwriting, catchiness, and memorability. Out of these two classics which one have you found yourself spinning more over the years?

I think "Painkiller" is the very epitome of heavy metal however I find that "Metal Meltdown" really annoys me. "Powerslave" is my favourite heavy metal album ever so it gets my vote.

Painkiller. I can't remember the last time I listened to Powerslave, I usually just listen to Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Painkiller just barely gets it. These were the two first albums that got me into metal funnily enough, so it's a pretty difficult battle.

Fuck this. I don't know.

Er, Powerslave I guess, because it was one of the first albums that got me into metal at a VERY tender age, the s/t track is my fave Maiden and a childhood obsession and come to think about it, the whole Maiden-itis of those years revolved around that album, so, yeah.

Painkiller is the only Priest album I like, but Powerslave wins this very comfortably..

Powerslave, of course.

Unless it's The X Factor, Maiden gets it every time. If it IS the X Factor, Painkiller would win.

Painkiller for sure. To me it has aged better and it sounds tough and not poncy! ;)

Painkiller. One of the most consistent records I can think of. The energy level and sheer driving force behind it are SO high, every track hits the bullseye.

Hmm.... not to be a fussy cunt, but Priest's peak was Vengeance/Defenders, Painkiller should be compared to Fear of the Dark really, which it would kill stone dead.

Priest's peak was '75 to '78.

And as awesome as Painkiller is, it was much like most of Priest's previous 80s output, ie. playing catch-up with the other trends going on at the time. Thrash had peaked a couple of years earlier and with Painkiller they were arriving very late to the party, trying to ride its coattails.

I voted for it because it's a better album than Powerslave, but Priest's best (as some claim)? No. Just no.

Priest catching up with the trends is most of the time a good thing. And yes, thrash played a huge part in shaping the sound of Painkiller but it's still 101% heavy metal (speed, power too) and the influence was MOST welcome, really inspired them, really woke them up. What I'm trying to say is that I am surprised that you say it like it's a bad thing.

Plus, 1990 is not really late to the party. And Ram it Down (the song) already pointed at the direction.

What were Priest doing in 1975? (Sad Wings didn't come out until 1976). Screaming for Vengeance is Priest's 'Powerslave', it was the album they broke the US with.

I thought British Steel was their US breakthrough?

It definitely is when you consider how long the trend of thrash lasted for. Thrash was pretty much dead by 1993.
