Post 90s alternative rock round 2
Another very tough call here. While I don't care for the Soundgarden record much, and not heard the STP one, the other albums range from good to classic. Siamese Dream is a really great record with lots of well written and memorable songs, but Nevermind is even more so and remains to this day Nirvana's most consistent and polished studio album.

But all of them are pretty much left behind by Dirt, perhaps AIC's most comprehensive artistic statement and an absolute classic of the 90s [although I still don't quite consider it their best album, BGWTB just tops it].

Dirt, no contest. Their high point and most 'them' sounding album, it's absolutely dripping in filth. Siamese Dream second, despite it being played to death back then. It still stands up better than the rest IMO, although my lack of interest in Nevermind is probably down to it being so ridiculously overplayed. Vs. was a watered down version of Ten for me and, while it's got some excellent tracks and is still a decent enough album, just doesn't measure up. Louder Than Love was an improvement on the debut but still flawed, and Purple should really have been called Beige.

I didn't get Vs. at all when I first heard it. I was expecting Ten part 2 and it really wasn't anything like that at all. Later listens revealed more of its charms though.

Very tough - Vs. barely over Dirt for me. Vs. was nothing like Ten and was hardly a "watered down" version of the latter.

All good albums though - nothing less than 3 fists (probably Purple.)

'Siamese Dream' - have never once gotten bored with it, ever. The crescendos on 'Rocket', 'Geek USA' and 'Silverfuck' are as close as have ever been gotten to actual orgasms in sound (as opposed to say, Axl recording the grunts of a girl he was boning in the studio, which is cheating), and some of the most life-affirming, stratospheric rock music of the 1990s, rivalled only by 'Ritual De Lo Habitual' three years earlier.

2nd place - 'Dirt'. I still remember my first basic reaction to it: "THAT is what Metallica should be sounding like." A massive improvement over the debut, guitar riffing that makes Hetfield's sound like a puppy crying, Layne's 'chamber of wailing lost souls' vocal effects in full flow (later semi-approximated by QOTSA), and proper fucking bleakness throughout with none of this redemptive/light at the end of tunnels shit to spoil it. Because when you're smacked up that much, it's just. One. Long. Tunnel.

3rd place - 'Vs'. Losing the slightly dodgy Tesla/Extreme - isms which occasionally marred the previous album, it's much rawer and more pleasing, and everyone is totally going off, especially Eddie.

'Nevermind' I love but it's just too overplayed, not that that's the band's fault. Soundgarden at this stage still sounding a bit too close to the Cult's cock rocking era for my liking...

Dirt has some very bleak moments for sure, but also a couple of chinks of light ['Rooster' for example] and there's a sense that the protagonist in many of the songs is at least alive and aware of it, though is hurting a lot. The s/t AIC album on the other hand is truly frightening, because that's the sound of a person who has totally given up on life and is like "yeah, that's it now". Very few albums have ever gone right down to the bottom in that way. It could be the bleakest album ever to top the US charts.

Dirt. No contest.

Not only is it the best album any of that lot have done, it's one of the best hard rock records of the 90s, and a genuine classic.

It's also the sound of a band that aren't particularly focused.

My order:

1.Dirt

2.Siamese Dream (although Clint makes a good case why it should be no.1)

3.Nevermind (Great album, but it has been overplayed and thus lost some of its impact)

4.Purple (I've listened to this album more than any other album on this list since the 90's, but it's not definitive sounding like Dirt, Siamese Dream and Nevermind).

5.Vs (I'd say this is level with Purple for me. I disagree that it's a 'watered down' Ten, in fact it's a far more original and interesting sounding album)

I've always found "Louder Than Love" to be a frustrating record. It has a few of my very favourite tracks of the entire grunge movement on it & I absolutely love Chris Cornell's vocals but it doesn't have the consistency of the other albums here.
