Post 90s alternative rock round 5
Last of the alt rock polls as AIC run out of albums after this.

I think I'll pick the AIC album this time round. It got some slating from people but there's a strong clutch of great songs in there. The Soundgarden record has some high points but it's no Superunknown.

This is the only round where I'm voting for STP. It's not their best album, but I find it more interesting to listen to than those other albums.

Yield is great! Faithful, Brain of J, MFC, Low Light, No Way, Given to Fly (a re-write of Going to California by Led Zep) are all 5 fist songs.

Machina, no contest. It took a while to grow on me (though not as long as Adore) and tails off a bit toward the end, but even so it's the best of the bunch by far. Down On The Upside is quite filler heavy, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is just bland and beige, I haven't heard Yield or the STP one.

I voted 'Down On The Upside', I still think it is underrated. It continues the previous album's weird dynamic of Cornell wanting to be some stadium god and the other three quietly announcing their displeasure by pulling the songs off into weird directions, so even the more straightforward stuff has a tension to it. And to be fair to CC, some of his singing ranks among the best of his career - if I'd managed to pull off the vocal performances on 'Pretty Noose', 'Burden In My Hand' and especially 'Tighter & Tighter', I'd probably think I was a stadium god as well. (Though I like to think I wouldn't have formed Audioslave.) And there are precious few other groups at that level of commerciality who'd chuck both a 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' tribute ('Ty Cobb') and a Residents homage ('Applebite') onto one of their albums...

'Machina'....this is where the Borgan overreached himself a bit, finally. The concept is daft even by his standards, and seems an unconvincing projection of his messiah complex (it's only the fictional-group-in-storyline who think they're Jesus, not Billy, oh no) and the super-dense production is almost overwhelming to listen to, especially on headphones. On the plus side it has lovely artwork, and some typically excellent songs: 'The Everlasting Gaze' crunches like a mutha, and 'The Imploding Voice' sounds like T-Rex if he was an actual t-rex.

'Yield' is actually one of Pearl Jam's most succinct and instantly memorable albums. It's what 'Ten' should have been, really.
