'Stained Class' by a hair, possibly because 'Sin After Sin' doesn't have anything as EPIC! as 'Beyond The Realms of Death'. Both great albums though. Obviously.

I agree - both are five fists but Stained Class has the photo thrash opening track and beyond.... Both the cover songs on the albums are superb by the way...

Sin After Sin, of course. Probably their best album.

SAS. But it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other really.

Maybe you could use the different drummers to make a choice. Simon Phillips' playing on Sin is stellar - he was 19 when he played on that album - but he was never really a full member. Binks upped the ante with the speed and is an amazing player too - double bass drum pioneer. One of them was the band's drumming high point anyway - probably Binks overall. They went downhill with each successive choice of drummer afterwards.

Stained Class by about two fists. I've never really taken to Sin after Sin, the production is horrible and muddy. The guitar sound is dreary and the songs on Stained Class are just much better.

Stained Class.

Quite surprised at the margin of preference for Stained Class here. But the real poll is Stained v. Sin v. Sad Wings - being Priest's absolute solid gold streak.

Stained Class. Went out and bought it the day I heard about the backmasked messages on it. Never managed to hear them myself, but it's a stunner. Sin After Sin isn't quite as solid.

Does anyone know how "Fire burns below" ended up the reissue of Stained Class? It must be a Turbo/ Ram It Down era song so how come it was chucked on SC?

There are a few bonus tracks tacked on to the reissues that are anachronistic, aren't there? I've only got the Painkiller one so can't be sure about others but I think I spotted some other out of place tracks dotted among them.

I got the five album box set thing which just has the CDs in cardboard slipcases. All the discs have misplaced bonus tracks. I didn't bother ripping most of the bonus tracks because a lot of them were unreleased for a good reason- they were shit.

"Stained Class" reasonably comfortably.

My best guess is there were a lot of tracks from the mid-to-late-80s which didn't make the cut, and not enough rare/unreleased/b-sides from the late-70s, and they had to add some bonus incentives. They were releasing pretty much an album a year during that period, which when you consider the quality of those releases shows they were operating at their peak.

Pretty much all of those bonus tracks from 'the earlier years of our career' are from the Turbo/Ram It Down recording sessions, they're perhaps just being diplomatic about it and trying to avoid drawing attention to how much stuff they wrote for that bizarre period in their history. Oddly a lot of those bonus tracks are better than what ended up on either album.

As for the poll, no contest, Stained Class all the way, their best album apart from Painkiller and a real step forward for metal as a whole - a very influential record. Diamond hard and mean. SAS has good songs but not the sheer cohesiveness and drive of SC.
