Post Death-Scream Bloody Gore vs. Possessed-Seven Churches
Early DM albums battle it out for what album was the greatest/most influential album (in your opinion). Which album had more of an influence on the early DM scene, and even though Chuck cited Possessed as an influence- did SBG have more of an influence than the album that preceded it?

Which album did you love/listen too more back when it first came out/you were introduced to it?

SBG is the better album by a mile. Musically they're clearly not competitive at all. Full marks for enthusiasm but SC is just all over the place.

Influence-wise it has to be SBG too. Possessed were basically seen as a minor thrash band at the time. They were part of it all starting maybe, but death metal was happening regardless.

Personally I rate "Scream Bloody Gore" a touch higher than "Seven Churches".

Scream Bloody Gore. Despite having a song called Death Metal, Possessed was a thrash band.

Possessed were MASSIVELY influential when I first got into them in 1988. It's doubtful that bands like Morbid Angel or Pestilence would exist in the same capacity without them. In fact the first two Morbid Angel albums have so many examples of pure Possessed worship that they could have been accused of plagiarism at times. Possessed's 1984 demo "Death Metal" was clearly a fairly brutal version of thrash metal. It sat somewhere between the first couple of Slayer albums & Venom's "Black Metal". "Seven Churches" on the other hand is fully fledged death metal. I'm surprised anyone thinks otherwise to be honest.

Seven Churches for me. Those riffs sound intense and have so much more energy than the riffs on Scream Bloody Gore. I'll admit I like the guitar tone and vocals on the latter more but that's about it.

and yeah, early Morbid Angel sounds quite a bit like early Possessed at times. I don't get how one would label Seven Churches as a thrash metal album.

Hard choice. I'll have to go with SBG though. Seven Churches has some savage riffs, and is twisted genius in places, but as Robit said, it is just all over the place. Which is part of its charm, as with so many albums of that era. But Scream is a fully formed 5 fist classic IMO, every song is fucking belting, the guitar tone, and that voice.

Both albums sound transitional to me, caught between two worlds, esp.SBG.

That's true to a point in regards to the thrash influence still being present, but the overall quality of the material, the sound etc on Scream makes it a more complete work.

Lots of death metal bands debuts are transitional - Malevolent Creation, Pestilence, Cancer etc - but none are as convincing or important as SBG. In fact, outside of the big hitters, few of the bands of the era have released anything of that quality in their entire career.

SBG was very thrashy itself as well as SC. Obituary's, Autopsy's, Morbid Angel's, Decide's debuts (which all came those couple of crucial years later) were all much more definitely death metal.

Possessed by a distance. Possessed started very well and went downhill fast, SBG is Death's worst album... probably.

No, that's clearly The Sound Of Perseverance, closely followed by Individual Thought Patterns. SBG is the least impressive of their first four, granted but it's still a fucking great album.

Apart from the production, what the fuck is wrong with ITP?
