Out of interest what's the best way of going about this? It's something I've been considering doing for a while, and as there's a few of you here with experience I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Any advice?

I sent a load of interviews and reviews (Arcturus, Sentenced, Lacuna Coil, Bal Sagoth, Moonspell, Misery Loves Co, interviews if I remember right) I'd done printed out with a covering letter expressing my interest to Da Ed (or Mr N Terry, more likely) and got a call back a few days later.

He said one of the thing that impressed was that I'd arranged the interviews off my own back or a fanzine (that I never actually put together and put out)and written them like magazine interviews and not Q and A's, they were written to a reasonable word count and professionally (e.g. objectively - to a point) written. Same with the reviews; they weren't fanboy or squash styles and they covered a variety of styles and bands and that I liked different styles and genres.

But that was late 90's so I'd imagine email is the way ahead now - establish contact with the Editor and forward your stuff (but don't spam her!)

Shameless self-promotion, ass kissing, doh eyes, constant badgering and so forth. Don't expect a reply to your first email or even your fifth...

Honestly though, work placement is the way. Most of the writers nowadays are taken on from doing a week or two at HQ at some point.

I always preferred "rock journalists are just failed musicians"

Well, I fall into pretty much both those categories!!

Cheers for the advice, it's very handy. I've published my own fanzine for a while now (although it's taken a bit of a back seat due to recent circumstances) so I've got some handy articles in the bag. I'll have to get back on the case with that as soon as I've put my life back together.

You mentioned work placements, how's the best way to get one? Is that down to badgering again?

Afraid so, but you're more likely to get a response when you're offering free labour.

I emailed James Minton, Miranda and Louise (twice) asking for work experience, and had to wait six months to hear anything, but now I've got a placement there. It's unpaid but it sounds pretty useful. Obviously I can't tell you how useful that is in getting the job as I've not even done the placement yet, but just keep asking.

Lee is always looking for people for Soundshock too so if you need experience of writing (again unpaid, but it's all good experience) email him. He's Lugzan.

It seems lately half of the writers in the mag nowadays were interns.

Hello Wolfie. I have no record of your email, when are you joining us for work experience?

If anyone wants to write, please do send samples to Louise@DarkArtsLtd.com and CC me in on the email.

Thanks. I'll send some samples over in a couple of weeks once I'm settled into my new flat.

You might like this as well....

I'll get some stuff over to you as well if you want. I need to get back on the case with my own zine/site soon, I've let that slip a bit over the past couple of months.

Top stuff. I'll have a proper trawl through the site later. Cheers.

Enos, please don't flog your guts out for free as an intern to get into an industry that will never put dinner on your table and that you could become an irrelevant, embarrassing uncle to to as soon as a new musical trend comes along that you don't fully grasp. Get a job with some security and freelance at the weekend writing about things you like.

Couldn't have put it better. But it is a buzz seeing stuff you've written in print. Or going through the VIP "Q-Jump" entrance at big gigs just because you're reviewing... lol
