good psyching-yourself-up, charging-into-battle music. If that makes sense.

Total sense. Well put.

They're a good example of how you can do energised viking-themed metal without bringing in accordions, "quirkiness" and excessively flouncy shrill homosexual overtones.

Spot on, Shallow. Good to see some balance injected into the collective opinion of Amon Amarth that exists on here. They're just always enjoyable and do what they do very, very well. They assemble their songs excelletnly and always set a great tone. They often remind me of ManOwaR, not in style obviously, but in the way they deal with their chosen theme and the edge they put on their material.

hahaa. i just read the following about Pulkas at 'Ask Earache':

Quote:
Sensing their greatness deserved better than the indie label they had just signed to, the band wasted no time in recruiting a manager who proceeded to shop them to major labels, even tho the band were contracted to us for 3 more albums. They broke off all contact with Earache so we were forced to spend 2 years wrangling via lawyers, defending our quite legitimate legal and moral position. At some point in the protracted process, the band split up.Almost 10 years on, the album was so ahead of its time, it still sounds contemporary-like it could have been released last week- but I dont think the ex-members have been in any notable bands since.

not that i was a fan of anything, but according to Digby, that's the story.

XIII 'likes' this (thumbs up) - although I did see in an old Tez I was flicking through when packing up the old house I gave Burning Bridges 8/10. I don't remember ever hearing it and certainly don't have it any more... I really liked it at the time judging from the review (though with hindsight, I think you could generally knock 1/2 a mark of most of my reviews. I think I was quite a keen, enthusiastic and generous reviewer most of the time)

Ah the good old days when every clean guitar part on an Arch Enemy song was ripped off from Whitesnake...

Not the best album. They have their plodding moments but their other songs make up for it.

The new'un has a handful of good tracks, but it's probably their weakest album they've ever made. Which is a shame as Twilight Of The Thunder God was pretty good.

They should have changed it up after the last one. It was perfectly serviceable if a bit staid. Would some blastbeats, a change of tempo and some new riffs been so hard to come by? Something, anything was needed. Oh well.... I'm sure if hyped well enough it'll be lapped up by the usual rank-and-file moron and will sit nicely on the pantheon of utterly dull mainstream metal.
