Is my A Forest of Stars live piece in there?

It's not actually Lee, which is a shame as some of the other live reviews are, well...

I'm surprised there has been no comment on here about the emo-looking Slipknot cover.

Where's Mali to tell us about how Metal Hammer is much better

I read the interview today with Joey J - basically 4 pages of him telling the reader how depressed he is and how the Murderdolls saved his life. Still marginally better than the Niklas Kvarforth interview - that man is a just a cunt with a capital C.

I'll save him the both- oof! Nooo surely not. It is orrible though, he may know his death metal inside out but he's not a man who deserves to be seen that close up (unlike, say, Eddie). Next to the Take A Break-style "I became severely mentally ill" strapline. Here's conspiratorial cynicism for you rob: one almost suspects that when these rock stars are having their nervous breakdowns at the back of their minds they're thinking "Still, at least I've got plenty to ramble on about on the next PR trail."

Oh and, the 'Five Other Guys Who've Taken Heroin' sidebar tacked onto (and presumably stealing the wordcount of) the review of the album by the band with the guy who's taken heroin. Really?

Oh shoosh, just read what the great man has to say on the cover, maybe then you'll understand death and black metal.

Indeed. The only one I thought was OK was the fourth one (The Subliminal Verses, something like that?) but I lost interest fairly quickly.

I hope so. Because they've been at it for long enough that they'll really hate each other by now, so will probably go at it for real.

The cover with it's Dutch/Kubrick angle makes Joey look like he's got severe brain damage, maybe even Downs Syndrome. Bad cover once again.

As for glorifying heroin use: Louise has lost the fucking grip. This seems that this is Tez's slide into Nuts territory!

Being a geek and digging out the issue cos I still have them close at hand (in a box in the garage) I interviewed them back in 2000 on their first UK tour and Joey and Mick (huge guitarist) are serious DM and thrash fans. They were soundchecking playing Sacrificial Suicide, to be fair.

I did the first ever "Hard Of Hearing" with them as well and they knew and loved (as in "singing" along to the riffs/playing accurate air drums to) tracks from (and I know these are the 'big' names, but stilll...) Carcass, Emperor, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Devils Island by Megadeth... (as well as hating on some nu-metal shit and Panacea, but giving a loving to Melt Banana) they did get Manowar - Metal Warriors - wrong, but only (apparently) cos they only liked the earlier stuff... Joey said he had every issue of Tez from issue 2

Does it get diluted by having 9 in the band... yeh, and they were open that they don't all listen to the same stuff, and its difficult to get a song written that pleases everyone.

As far as Slipknot goes, they've got some awesome songs, and for me Iowa is a strong, really heavy album. I think other than Iowa they've not released a consistent album, but each album has some really good tunes on it

Why bring this up in a review? Seriously, if it was to fill up space because your reviewer was floundering you could have done "5 other people who used his make of guitar" or "5 other guys who wrote about this subject matter" but you went with the heroin angle. You focussed on the heroin angle.

Why? You may say it played an important part in his songwriting process but then basically trivialising it by listing other users willy-nilly whilst aiming the mag at a younger demographic... maybe it's an age thing and I'm getting crotchety, but to me that's certainly not what I'd expect. Maybe I'm just being over-reactionary and missing the point - if so, please correct me.

Is this how you guys are filling expectations on being 'Music's most dangerous mag'? To me it seems like another really bad decision in a evergrowing list that the mag has followed over the last year or two.

Yeah the exact same thing was done in Kerrang in the late 90s and I remember finding it tawdry then. It should at least be made clear that you should be well into your sixties before you start taking heroin.
