Whilst this is undoubtably true, this month has a two page spread on The Sisters Of Mercy. They have no abum to plug, and no record label at all so one presumes that any editorial choice to feature them is based simply on a desire to feature them, rather than on an attempt to sell advertising.

I prefer reviews out of 5, simpler, less fannying around with half marks etc, the problem for me is the word count. There's enough space for a witty opener and a soundbite and the review is done...

I know some of you will scoff, but these days I do think, particularly with Subterranea and the fact that they both cover pretty much exactly the same bands all in Metal Hammer does it better at the moment, but you do have to put up with several pages of Tom-core shit each month...

There is really none of my music taste in Metal Hammer apart from at the very back in Subterranea, sometimes BMTH are featured but I don't particularly like them too much anymore, I don't hate them either though but eh because a couple of Deathcore bands get mentioned then it doesn't mean it's any good. It's far too concerned with being METALLLLLL. Or some other shite.

I'm with Gene, the layout is annoying and the increase various "core" genres covered is bad, but the worst problem is the poor quality and low quantity of writing and all the teen-orientated sidebars and schtick. My subs ran out last autumn and I had decided not to renew long before it expired.

Not sure what oyu mean by this, but if you mean hardcore, grindcore and power violence stuff it's about the same as it's always been, no more or less than usual. Jose and Glasper cover most of it as they always have.

Aye, but where are they playing in a couple of weeks? Sonisphere. So it's not like it's out of the blue that they are featured, a bit of promotion before a festival I would have though.

Not that I mind, I've really been getting into them this last month or so :P

Tom, I haven't read Tegs for about a year and was referring to the rising covergae of Deathcore/Nu-hardcore form a couple of years back, that may no longer be the case, but it did annoy me at the time. That is very very much secondary to the lack of quality writing.

I haven't bought a Heavy Metal magazine for two years (apart from an issue of Terrorizer once for a train journey, of which I read less than half and enjoyed less than that), and I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out, or am less informed about forthcoming releases than when I read at least one a month.

No, and to presume that people do still read magazines to get up to date is wrong IMO (I'm not saying you're saying this). With the Internet and forums being as prevelant as they are, magazines simply cannot compete. The only reason people will continue to read magazines is because of interesting interviews they can't find elsewhere, and because of quality writing. I read all of Avi Pitchon's reviews, for example, even though he likes a lot of stuff I don't, just because his writing is entertaining to read.

Personally, I still think there's a lot to be said for trusting a particular writer's expert opinion too (Glasper, Chantler or James Hoare for example), but I appreciate this is probably not a view many people share any more, due to new ways to discover bands, and just being able to listen to the album yourself before deciding whether or not it's worth buying.

As I've already demonstrated with my Amiga Power example, I'll happily read a magazine about a dead scene that I no longer give a shit about if it's well-written and creative. Terrorizer does not seem to be that magazine, to me anyway.

The last one I bought was the Gaahl/Dani Filth one. I don't remember the number.

I only know the numbers because they're on the floor next to my desk, under the two issues of Sick Sounds.

You have missed an opportunity to imply that the Irish wash their babies in the same water they wash their dishes and are therefore poor and/or stupid and naturally inferior to yourself as an Englishman. You are failure even for a Sais.

I prefer it when you Mud People fight amongst yourselves, it highlights your inferiority and makes me touch myself.
