Post Re: Tegs Top 50 Albums of 2012
Also, bas, with few exceptions, most Tez journos don't do this for a living. When I worked there, only Nick Terry and the Assistant Ed (initially Andrew Carter, then Greg Whalen, then Cat Yates) did it for a living. I think Glasper got paid a retainer (though I may be wrong on that, but he probably wrote the most outside of Nick and da Ass per issue) but it wasn't enough to live on, and Andrew Carter had other involvements I believe - he went on to manage bands and be involved in that side of things (which is how I got the Cubanate gig), so it all fits in around your other work (yet somehow takes priority over the day-to-day job! lol I remember phoning in a sickie to go up to London to do the Machine Head interview, which was fine by me!).

Average month I'd probably get 2 interviews - one short or upfront, and one 2 pager with a "Bigger" band (for me, usually a Mercyful Fate, Testament, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Moonspell sized band), sometimes it was 2 mid-sized bands instead (Malevolent Creation, Daemon, Withering Surface level, so a page and half for those), depended on who it was and who else was doing what. So you HAVE to prepare for those bigger band interviews and they're also usually bands you care more about or know more about so actually you want to hear the new stuff, which can also involve revisiting back catalogue. Then you've got to write them up. Plus then I'd normally do a live or 2 review, so that's a couple of trips up to London a month. Then I'd get usually 5 or 6 albums, of varying size, stature and quality to review.

So, yeh, for your bog standard band, 2 listens sounds about right, bigger bands, or albums that grab your attention get more, but it's a machine and a cycle, and you're expected to just keep going with it. And keep on top of the other releases you're not reviewing. For example, when XI Equilibrium came out, I didn't review it, but wanted to hear it, and listen to it, and know it, or Nick'd phone and send me a copy of something, just to get into, because it was a buzz band, or really good - though my stuff was just before downloading etc kicked off, so a lot of it was still promo CD's and phoning labels for copies rather than just zapping off the net. And you need to try and get these cornerstone albums to stay in the brain so you can constantly update your points of reference.

Add into that everything else going on in life, it's not easy to give everything a fair shot, but you do your best.

I'll be honest, part of me saying I dropped out of the scene, and not checking out new music for most of the 00's was doing all the above, and you find after a while you're listening to things because you have to, not because you want to, and you're discovering less new exciting stuff and more shit, and on top of doing my own band, and having a job, I just got burned out on underground metal. There really are only so many shit Polish blackened thrash bands you can hear, and sometimes you just need a time out.

I just took an incredibly long time out!

Yeah I couldn't handle that. I have a strict regime for listening to music. I like to listen to an album to the point where I know what riff is going to follow, when the cool bridge is coming up, the solos, the money shots etc. Knowing lyrics is a big bonus too. I can't deal with casual listening or background music.

I reviewed this for Marksson's website. In the interests of professionalism I managed a whole song.

Well, that's Wackiest Poster 2013 sewn up, then.

I hope you've made room on your mantlepiece.

In before "I don't have a mantlepiece. Fire is obsolete."

5 fists might be a bit generous for all of them but they never dipped lower than 4 except on remix albums.

Those 4 are all solid 5/5 releases. Their/his remix albums/EPs and especially their/his subsequent albums never got above 2/5.

Quite right. No fireplaces in this building at all.

47. Black Shape Of Nexus - Negative Black
48. Latitudes - Individuation
49. Ides Of Gemini - Constantinople
50. Vision Of Disorder - The Cursed Remain Cursed

Fairly predictable I suppose, I have seven of these. Am probably interested in hearing another 10 or so, there are several I haven't heard of. Swans should have been AOTY.

Seeing as the Asphyx album isn't on there at all i would say that list is pretty redundant.
No Overkill or Marduk is pretty shocking too.
Enslaved release a record and it's not Terrorizer Album Of The Year shock!

I have these, still not listened to the Unsane or Converge, thought JK Flesh is overrated and the Ides is just elevator music

Maybe it's the sound of a well off chap trying to sound angsty and fucked off?

Pretty Hate Machine sounds as actually passionate as Ke$ha to me. "Oh I'm so fucked up, so poor, and so rock that I have this whole studio to wave my ego around in. Oh boo hoo me!"

Downward is at least interesting, and Fragile has a few ok tracks on. Somewhat Damaged is ace though, as an example of a crescendo song.

Can't say NIN has ever especially done it for me either. I found from that era that Manson was more interesting with the first two albums.

I can only speak personally obviously but I aim to give an album two listens minimum before I write a review. I'd always like to do more, but firstly that's not always possible given how long you've got between being given the album and what else you have to do in your life that week, and secondly a lot of albums don't merit that - they aren't going to get any better the more you listen. Since most of what I get given is towards the grind end of things it's rarely anything very complex that needs time to digest and mull over - I'd imagine reviewing a new Deathspell Omega album is very different from reviewing the second album of some German no-hope grind band.

How may listens did you give the Browning? ;)

Ian (TTT guitarist) would love that.

Three! Maybe even four. I knew I'd be predisposed to dislike it, so I was determined to be fair.

For those of you who haven't heard the band, whom Sabazius can now claim the pleasure of being labelmates with:

Remember, this came out in 2011, not 1996.

I don't understand what's happening with matey in the video. He follows the chick into the club, then into the jacks, then grows vampire teeth - but oh wow she's a vampire too. Awful music. God, you had to listen to that several times, Ed?! Jesus. :(

Is "The Browning" a heightened supernatural state in which you shit yourself with beyond-human power?
