Post Are There Legitimate Satanists In Metal?
Apart from the Akercocke lads, who have this whole Dennis Wheatley vibe going on, which smacks of utter bollocks, the whole Norwegian BM thing is complete shite too. Is there anyone who believes in this old guff and practices the crap?

Depends whether you mean theistic or non-theistic Satanism. There'd be plenty of non-theistic Satanists I'd think.

Mostly I think it's just used as an excuse to act like a cunt.

I'm pretty naive on what exactly 'Satanism' constitutes (mainly because it seems like a pretty open interpretation left to the individual). Would someone like Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection) be considered a Satanist? Apparently he was very critical of LaVeyan Satanism, but considered himself a Satanist.

And apparently the guys in Deathspell Omega consider themselves Satanist, or at least ideal
ideologically.

But who knows. It's a whole lot of a grey area, especially when you start to get into the whole Second Wave Black Metal thing.

The only HPOS I knew didn't listen to metal except Aerosmith but later became a Christian. (Was told this was to 'get a foot in the enemy cam' but he was converted.)

These were meant to be legit Satanists

Which is all the more laughable when you hear their only hit song

Vincent Crowley of Acheron was a priest in the Church of Satan.
Selim Lemouchi of The Devil's Blood seemed very serious about it.

The first album (of which I have a copy) has a few songs about the occult on there and the last track is (supposedly) a recording of a Satanic Black Mass. I wouldn't know if it's authentic as I've no knowledge of what constitutes true Satanism or what they do in black masses. What do you guys and girls reckon?

Coven is cool and all, but as far as actually being Satanists go, I think it is just latching onto the controversy that was happening around then with other bands like Black Sabbath and Black Widow.

My understanding is that LeVeyan Satanism (Church of Satan - basically the preeminent version of Satanism) is pretty tame at any rate, and the imagery it uses tends to be just to piss people off (particularly Christians). You could pretty much just class them as atheists as they aren't believing in any deities above (or below) for the most part.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree with some of their views, but it does sort of excuse you to behave like a dickhead a little, and theses are probably the types we conjure up in our minds when we think of the Norwegian BM scene, though Varg is on record saying that none of them were Satanists for the most part and putting it down to idiot kids being idiot kids.

Coven had their LP out before Black Sabbath and Black Widow (69 for Coven, 70 for BS & BW), there's even arguments that Black Sabbath ripped them off to some degree

Oh, and that mass at the end of the LP is staged as fuck, as is this

I've often wondered this. Jon Nodtveidt of Dissection seemed to take it pretty seriously, and became a high ranking priest in the Misanthropic Luciferian Order. Apparently, they were plotting all sorts of sacrifices, including friends and bandmates.

Allegedly, he died by shooting himself in the head whilst sat in a satanic circle, with their "bible" open in front of him. I understand suicide was the next step in their "evolution" , when they attained the highest levels of power and grew beyond this life. Dying a natural death, or by others, was not an option (so I've read). He seems to have been a properly nasty bastard as well.

Aren't the dudes in Behexen supposed to be properly evil 'n' stuff? I've also heard rumours about Watain, but that's probably BS.

For the most part, most of them who profess to be "satanic" seem to merely use it as symbolism for freedom and empowerment. Nergal, from Behemoth, seems to be one of these.

The whole traditional black metal scene seems to have been a reaction to the strong Christian influence in Scandinavia and the way it has usurped the older Norse beliefs. Yes, a few took it more literally than others, but ultimately, it was a rebellion, rather than a true belief system.

Yep ^

As much as I enjoy the novelty, if I spoke to somebody in the bar who professed to be part of the occult, I would sit somewhere else.
