Post subject:  My experience as a teenager with an alternative fashion sens

I am 32 years old today but as a teenager I had a small group of friends who were what many would describe as Goths. We all lived in Midland's.

Myself and 2 friends were on our way to a planned Bonfire and we all wore New Rock's and other alternative apparel and found ourselves in trouble as a group leaving a pub accosted us. Thankfully I was unconscious for the most part.

My 2 friends were deeply affected by it, one would never speak with me or my other friend again and my other friend completely abandoned the scene altogether is now a left wing anarchist of some kind.

The point of this thread is my wanting to know if there was anybody who had a similar teenhood as I did and had similar problems in public or was my own unfortunate experience unique to us?

I certainly toned down my image but are now planning on returning to the gigging scene with my partner and we're kitting ourselves in something more than plain jeans and band tees and hoodies for such occasions regardless of how socially acceptable they are.

That sucks, friend. Can’t say that I ever really had anything similar as a teen, at least not to that extent. I did cop a few punches to the face at a school dance before my friends got between us (I was actually sitting down at the time). The guy who did it wasn’t that bad of a guy, I think some others who were not fond of our little group maybe egged him on or lied to him that I had said something (he had walked up to me and said, “what did you say about me?” before laying the first hit). Plus he was clearly under the influence of alcohol. I’ve never been more glad to have a hard head. Fortunately the only real ‘altercation’ I’ve had.

It sounds like the guy ought to be embarrassed. Drinking has the opposite effect on me, I tend to sing and dance

I used to get called 'Hippy' a lot, which I found ironic as I always had short hair. Took a bit of flak for going into school wearing a bulletbelt one time though...

I'd have been suspended for wearing a bullet belt

'Hippy' was a big thing in Dublin when I lived there, for anyone with long hair. To be fair, I used to wear tie-dye T-shirts a lot...
