I mainly watch film or music documentaries, to be honest. Hearts Of Darkness (the making of Apocalypse Now) is every bit as good as the film itself, I can also recommend Burden Of Dreams (the making of Fitzcarraldo) and Dangerous Days (TMO Blade Runner). This Film Is NotYet Rated is also good, if not great.

Musically, recent BBC docs on Hawkwind and Krautrock did it for me, not to mention that Kraftwerk/German electronic music one:

Wild China - Was originally shown on BBC 2 about three years ago. You can get it on DVD for cheap now. The best wildlife documentary series I've ever seen.

And most stuff on BBC Four.

Ancient British (and inevitably some Irish) history:







The last one is a three part series that investigates whether you can trace Viking DNA in Britain and Ireland today, as well giving a history of their presences on these islands.

Adam Curtis did a three part 90 min per episode series called All Watched Over By The Machines of Loving Grace, I only saw the final episode which was about the genocide in Rwanda and the West's implications in it. It's not on Youtube. His series The Power of Nightmares on The War on Terror is acclaimed too.

The "Tattoo Age" documentaries on the Vice TV website robit put up are definitely worth watching if you have any interest in the sub-culture/art form of tattooing.

The Hawkwind doc was brilliant, I'll be checking out that Krautrock one too.

Obviously. When he made brilliant, intelligent documentaries instead of lending his voiceover to provide ersatz gravitas to 'nature porn'.

Everything that Adam Curtis does. His programmes are more like brilliantly explained and interesting lectures than standard documentaries, but you don't notice it because they're so engaging.

I just finished watching Until The Light Takes Us which was quite interesting although I knew most of the stuff talked about already. Grishnakh seems surprisingly upbeat in it.

Yeah, I found that as well. Fenriz just looks a bit bemused a lot of the time, like he can't wait for them to fuck off, and he'd rather be drinking and listening to thrash with his mates. Frost looks like a total fucking plum. Although the kids face when he gets on the plane is priceless.

^ I got the feeling Fenriz didn't really have any mates if I was honest.

Yeah he does. I especially liked the bit near the end when he's doing that "performance" and slipping all over the place in his big black metal boots while stabbing a couch.

I imagine he is something of a loner by choice, but he is supposedly friendly enough with the guys in bands like Aura Noir and Old, and his hiking buddies. He has a bird too I think.
