5 fist documentary. It'll take a few more watchings to take it all in, as only the prehistory bit I'm completely up to speed with, but the whole bit on the Civil War seemed very good to me. I like his posh voice too. I'd certainly recommend it.

Have you seen Neil Oliver's Histories of Ancient and Celtic Britain? They were really good, very thorough, I thought.

Don't think I have seen Britain BC. Tried googling it. Is it the one with Francis Pryor? If so, I've read his book of the same title.

Got both on DVD. They are ace, I like him a lot as he's very clear with explaining plus he knows his stuff. He's good on 'Coast' too.

I like his Ancient Britain ones as he is wary enough to not say anything is definite, whilst also giving it that TV gloss that's needed to look like he knows exactly what he's talking about.

I will watch both this week. I like Pryor, but he's a little keen on running away with his ideas and saying them like they are facts, when they aren't. Old school academic archaeologists used to go off on flights of fancy about how life was, and Pryor is a little like that. Likeable guy though, and he certainly knows his stuff.

Britain AD is on King Arthur from the quick google I had, and I think from what I know of some of those ideas that they could be founded on something that isn't implausible.

I will have a go at them all in the week though as Britain BC the book is fantastic.

I was looking into him a while ago because I was looking for stuff along the lines of the Britain BC book, so I might look into his other work on Anglo-Saxons and farming too.

Any other books or documentaries on that period I should be checking out?

Documentaries, joking aside, Alice Robert's Digging for Britain has a few decent episodes on those time periods.

Is it particularly post-Roman / Saxon you're after? If so I'm possibly not your man. Prehistory is more my specialism, asking me about all that nu-skool medieval stuff is like asking Shallow about swords made on 17th October 1752 as opposed to ones made on 21st October 1752...

Late prehistory, especially Iron Age and including farming, Barry Cunliffe is the don on that area. 'Iron Age Communities in Britain' is his seminal work on the subject, and whilst I haven't read it yet, I've skimmed through my copy and it looks brilliant. 'Britain Begins' is the other one of his I got recently.

Its more pre - roman Britain I'm after at the moment actually.

Although I am interested in the early medieval period.

I tell you a program I enjoyed on tv here recently, 'Wolfland' about the role of the wolf in Irish society, up until the plantation and Cromwell era.

We had wolves here that recently? I'm surprised, I thought they were extinct well before that.

Yeah, apparently the last reliable story of one being killed was actually in the late 1700's, although they would have been scarce in number by then obviously. They were limited to certain parts of England by the 1500's but were still more widespread here and in Scotland.

So by the time of Cromwell they were more feared by British than the natives (and they had actually increased in number around that time) so it wasn't until then that anyone had tried to hunt them to extinction.

In that case, Cunliffe is a great choice for the Iron Age, and his other writings are worth checking out too. 'Prehistory' by Derek Roe is a bit outdated (1970s) but is worth a read. If you want earliest humans in Britain, then Homo Britannicus by Chris Stringer is ace. Books on specific areas can be quite good too, Prehistoric Avebury by Aubrey Burl is pretty good and covers from early Neolithic to beaker period.

I shall try to find that online. Cheers.

Just watched this excellent Noisey documentary on One man Black Metal projects. I'm not sure how much of what each protagonist says is contrived, but some of the stuff, especially that concerning Xasthur, is really harrowing. The one who is most captivating, to me, is the guy from Striborg. I can relate to a fair bit of what he says.

Here are all 3 parts for anyone who wants to watch:

That's been a bit of a comedy favourite on here for a while, DG, sorry. I felt some actual sympathy for the guy from Leviathan, but the others are a pair of twats (especially the knob from Xasthur, who needs a solid fucking slap), and none of the music played is particularly interesting. The bit with Striborg guy screaming in the cave is hilarious.

WELL I THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD YOU BUNCH OF CUNTS.

Nah, fair enough. Yes indeed, that scene with Striborg screaming in the cave is pretty hilarious. But what he said about nature appeals to me. I also found him to be the most likeable of the three. The guy from Xasthur came across as pretty pretentious but I couldn't help but feel sorry for him when he delved into the really personal stuff.

I also like the bit when the interviewer asks one of them to scream "kill!" in a Black Metal voice. The guy refuses for the not unreasonable reason that "it would sound stupid", but the interviewer asks again so he does it, it sounds really stupid, and is followed by three seconds of uncomfortable silence. Lesson for lonely Black Metal autists - always trust your instincts.
