His first video was great, but yeah, after that he's all about swearing and volume.

Mr Bean is awful shite.

Actually, as much as I slag it off, the original Mr. Bean TV specials were pretty damn accomplished as slapstick goes. Not my kind of comedy at all, but they're well done and have a certain grace and wit to them which is impressive for such physical humour. The later stuff was appalling, though, especially the films, and I absolutely lose my shit and flip out when people call Rowan Atkinson Mr. Bean as if that's actually his name.

There was an Irish attempt at the same thing (dialogue free slapstick), it was 10 times worse. Very popular in Europe, though.

There was Gregor Fisher (Rab C Nesbitt) as The Baldy Man as well, that was also shite.

That was pre-Mr. Bean though, wasn't it? Maybe I've got it wrong but yeah, it was definitely crap.

So was Rab C. Nesbitt, incidentally.

1995 according to Wiki, Mr Bean 1989, which surprised me, didn't realise it was that old.

Good article on the "Arthur's day" racket in the Belfast Telegraph.

Quote:

The idea was to use an instantly recognisable, stereotypical image of Ireland to create a phony occasion of celebration for branded export around the world.

First, they had to take Ireland. The word in ad-land is that there was considerable nervousness on this score at first. The plan would backfire badly if the response in Ireland was of anger at the self-evident insult.

'Arthur's Day' is sickening, patronising shit at its worst. The most cynical, manipulative and offensive marketing ploy I've heard of, this side of 'Freedom Fries' at any rate. Gobshites who get suckered in, who wouldn't touch the stuff 364 days of the year, gulping down pints of Guinness as though it actually meant something to do so on the day. If it had been left atone, on the 250th anniversary, one could almost congratulate them for their marketing coup, but to repeat it every year since. It turn your stomach.

I must confess to having a pint of it on the first day, getting caught up in 'the craic' (I was in the pub where my sister works, she stuck a pint in my hand and said something along the lines of "every other gobshite is gulping it down, these ones (there were more) are on me"), but I did raise an eyebrow to the whole "to Arthur!" bullshit and just enjoyed my pint.

On the second year, I was in Tesco and an acquaintance came up to me and asked me why I wasn't "out for a few pints for Arthur's Day". I hadn't the heart to tell him he was being a twat (he's a mate's father and a nice chap) so mumbled something about having a cold and left it at that, quietly bewildered and dismayed that it had only taken a year for the scam to become accepted and an 'event'. Fucking hell. Job done as far as the marketing department are concerned, I suppose.

Is "Arthur's Day" much different to Paddy's Day? In terms of what people do/are expected to do?

It's wholly invented by the company and not as big a deal, thankfully. Mainly jumped on by students as it's not long after they go back. Any excuse for a piss up. I'm sure it'll go away soon.

I appreciate that it's a recent invention, so it's just being stereotypical and lovin' de craic?

Essentially, yes. Pathetic, really. Even more so than other sheep/fool non-events like Valentine's Day, but with even less validity.

I have never celebrated Arthur's Day. I didn't even drink a full pint of Guinness until I was 28.
It's only 4.1% and gives you the worst heartburn so I'll stick to my German nectar and celebrate Oktoberfest instead.

I like Guinness if I'm having the odd quiet pint. Couldn't have more than one or two though, and I definitely wouldn't drink it if I was out for the night.

Indeed. A good pint is nice but one or two is enough.

Arthur's Day can get fucked obviously.

Didn't the Manics play for it? How very socialist of them. Maybe they would like to play in tribute to Colonel Sanders at some sort of KFC-fest next.

Really? I've always found it very smooth if heavy.

It's just not a 'thing'! It's a fucking marketing ploy, nothing else. It annoys me to hear people talk about it as though it existed. Twats! Twats, I say!
