Anyone seen this?

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/a ... -klitschko

I do think bravado and character have a place in boxing, but hate-speech obviously doesn't. Fury does make reference to how he "plays the villain" so it's obviously a persona to some extent, but I think he cares more about the backlash than he'd have people believe.

Klitschko's past it now. Agree with the people who say he should be fighting Joshua.

The "hate speech" will get viewers and more money. They're prize fighters, so if it generates income for them, job done. He may care about the backlash, but he probably likes the cheques more.

Last year, Leicester City celebrated avoiding relegation by holding a racist orgy. I wonder how they're going to top that?

Disgusting, yes. Surprising, no. It happens in all football codes all over the world. Professional sportsmen are often professional assholes. It also happens with rugby players in NZ, AFL and League in Australia, NFL in the US, and football players all over the rest of the world. And it's not just limited to those sports either.

It doesn't lessen Leicester City's sporting achievement at all, but I wouldn't want any of them to come over for tea.

I have no knowledge of who these football players are - but I find it very hard to believe that Thai pay-ladies would find working for rich, famous sports stars a bad thing, no matter how badly they were treated. Tabloid rags fabricating a story by the looks of it.

Post subject:  Re: Sports Thread

There was no rugby on last night, because the All Blacks are preparing to rub Wales' nose in a 63 year losing streak next week, so I had the choice of watching replays of last year's rugby world cup (seen it, the best team won) the inconsistent-as-fuck Warriors (rugby league, boring, pointless game for morons who don't understand contested rucks and mauls) or soccer.

I went for the awesomeness which is the Oceania Nations Cup! 8-) Yes, I know some sort of Euro tournament is coming up, which everyone all over the world watches, sells outs stadiums, is played in glamorous locations like France, and stars multi-millionaire primadonnas who fall over every couple of minutes when someone bumps into them, but New Zealand isn't eligible for that tournament because of some sort of fault of geography. So we get this instead!

Last night's game was the All Whites (the name is modeled after the All Blacks since the team plays in white, and is not racist, unlike what a few clueless people will tell you  ) versus the Solomon Islands, played in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The stands weren't exactly overflowing with people...

The big problem with Oceania soccer tournaments is since the Aussies ditched Oceania, deciding they were Asians instead, New Zealand is always expected to win these tournaments, so all the other teams simply just stack the defense and let the All Whites show their frustration and incompetence by not being able to break down a ten-man defense. And that's what happened last night. The Solomons were pretty quick on the counter-attack, with striker Benjamin Totori running like a fucking champion, but never really threatened, forcing only one save from NZ's keeper all night. And the Solomon's keeper, with the excellent name of Phillip Mango, played bloody well while his defenders often panicked a bit.

And while some of what I've said here has been a bit facetious, it was actually quite a gripping watch. The result was never truly in doubt, but this was good, honest football. There was no diving, no theatrics, and none of the bullshit which often detracts from the game. No, the skill level on offer is nothing like what you see in the Euros, or any other tournament anywhere else in the world, but it's good, honest, ruggedly contested football. The double digit blow-outs which were a part of the reason for the Aussies moving to Asia don't happen any more. Last night it was two teams fighting it out as hard as they could to a crowd of fuck-all people, but it didn't matter. If more football was played like this, the game might actually become popular here.

Anyway, NZ finally managed a goal in the 80th minute, and both teams qualified for the semis, thanks to three wins for NZ and goal difference for the Solomons. The other semi-finalists will be either New Caledonia, Tahiti or Papua New Guinea, with Samoa already out of contention.

Well, NZ scraped past New Caledonia. Into the final vs Papua New Guinea.

And good to see English football fans as classy as ever. Apparently the latest chant in Marseille ahead of the Euro thingy is "ISIS, where are you now?"

The rugby is going to be a bit dull this weekend. The Welsh are kind of pathetic at the moment and are going to get smashed by the ABs, and the Poms are going to roll the over-confident Aussies, who aren't as good as they think they are.

Bloody hell, some bugger has taught the Welsh how to play rugby! 18-15 at half time.

Normal service has resumed. 39-21 to the ABs.

Wales were game, and had the skills, but as usual, as for every other team in the world, they got tired in the last 20, and that's where the All Blacks got them. It's been happening for 25 years now, but no other team seems to actually get out and do the fitness training needed to keep up with the All Blacks. Is it too hard to just go for a fucking run? Richie McCaw, who has now retired from all rugby, couldn't stop running, so he now competes in adventure races which last several days. Wouldn't think many other retired rugby players would do that.

And New Zealand has won the Oceania Nations Cup to book their place at the Confederations Cup. Beat Papua New Guinea on penalties. Oceania doesn't deserve a slot in the World Cup if that's what happens. Gonna have to keep playing off against Mexico and Uruguay.

Oh dear Australia... Dumb rugby. Unless you're playing the long game and trying to lull the Poms into a false sense of security.
