I watched Blood Simple the other night.
Great film. Some brilliant use of camera, and a story so confusing you daren't nip off to the loo without pausing it.

It sounded like an up market cunt film to me, beats a plumber knocking at the door asking "have you got a problem that keeps getting you wet" type of film.

It's part of a series, and quite frankly Aurora is the only girl in it who can even vaguely act. The others are fucking terrible.

It's not black and white though, so Stat would say it hasn't aged well.

And not a patch on the director's earlier, lesser known work.

just taken a look at his website. Entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

I think he was lucky in that he was around at a time when horror novels were big business so some publishers were looking for the next King/Herbert etc. I remember every book store had the same list: Barker, Herbert, Hutson, King, Koontz, Laymon, Lovecraft, Lumley and Rice. If you were lucky maybe Campbell and Straub.

To look at those names now, well, says it all.

Kooontz, awful shit.

Depends how much you like the actors.

I don't know them from a hole in the ground.

Isn't shaun hutson equally shit? Slugs basically being a poor man's version of Herbert's Rats. And then at some point he ceased to right horror and turned everything into east end gangster books. That and the fact every cunting page he told his how his characters cannot talk, they rasp.

His books started off as horror then became what he termed 'urban thriller'. Basically, gangster books, although some of them still had horror elements (Such as RENEGADES which was about an IRA commander trying to uncover the secret of immortality by channelling Gilles De Rais or something).

I used to love his books when I was a kid but his new stuff has been crap. Mostly ending with the type of convoluted, shitty twist than would make even M Night Shaymalan blush.

Was Hutson the one who was always on about loving Iron Maiden?

Yup. He'd always mention them in the 'acknowledgements' section of his books. Not so much during the 90's though.

He used to have lyric quotes from really naff bands like Great White as well. Like, where 'serious' authors would put a bit of a speech from Jawaharlal Nehru at the beginning of their terribly serious novel about the fall of the British Raj, SH would have something cribbed from 'Twice Shy' to kick off a graphic description of a woman being forced to fellate a corpse or something.

Fucking METAL, eh, Shaun.

He's also written about a hitman killing his target to 'Welcome To The Jungle' by GnR and a couple shagging while the woman's sister listened to 'Disposable Heroes' by Metallica.

You think that's wacky?

Assassin was about three London gangsters who rise from the dead to get revenge on the guy who killed them, while the titular 'Assassin' kills off all the other gangsters and a group of poor people kill those richer than them.

So, 30000000000 years after everyone else, 'Kill List':

I won't recap the plot 'cos everyone is more or less up to speed with it, suffice it to say that instead of the portentous title cards actually used, we could have just as easily had the film divided into the following three chunks:

i.) a bit of Mike Leigh

ii.) just some pros doin' their job

iii.) mad shit

I will say this: I have little time for baseless conspiracy theories about what goes on in the upper echelons of power and the endless internet speculation about Messrs. Savile, Smith, Brittan, etc. is fit for nothing but weary amusement, but the direction this film takes really does play on fears you might have about that stuff being true, and it does so bloody well. There's a definite and undeniable...frisson. All the more impressive given that it was released a month or so before Savile died. Coincidence sure, but it gives it a certain something.

Tempted to go for the 4 on this one.

Kill List is a 4 Fist film until it fucks itself up the arse with a 1 Fist ending.

3 Fists overall.

Sleeping Beauty - Not the Disney one. Browning was superb, the film was OK. Never kinky or 'erotic' despite the frequent nudity.

It was a pretty mediocre film in my view, but the actress was quite good yes.
