The expense alone makes it not for me, even before you factor in any trouble caused by getting too historically accurate.

It's neither the cheapest nor most expensive hobby out there, and like all hobbies you can spend more or less according to your budget. Kit's the biggest expense, especially if you want to look awesome, but there are always cheaper options, and most small-medium systems will happily lend new players generic kit if they don't have any.

Also, in most systems crewing (playing NPCs) is free and they provide you with kit, so you only need food and transport. It's a good way to get a taste of whether or not it's for you, actually, and lets you play around with different things rather than get tied up in one character.

Transport costs alone would preclude it. Also, the kit they would supply would be normal-sized kit for normal-sized people, and thus pretty useless to me.

Monster kit (generic crew stuff) is very much one-size fits all, and if you bring generic black trousers and tops they'll accessorize you with bits on top. When I crew, which is rarely, I normally end up wearing fat-man trousers. As for transport, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a local branch of F&H or some small Nottingham system close enough for bus or train.

Fair enough, though, I'm really not trying to persuade you, just talking for the sake of it.

One size most definitely does not fit "all".

Fresh nerdsplosion: Having a conversation with a guy I know through KDF - a real old hand in the wargaming community - about the various merits of assorted varnishing methods. He casually drops into conversation what John Blanche used to do to his stuff when they met in the pre-GW Asgard Miniatures days, and then randomly emails another old acquaintance - Mike fucking McVey - to find out which means he employs.

I tell you what, I'd be shit hot in a game of Six Degrees of Sad Cunts right now.

Thank you for plucking one lazy cliche out of my post and ignoring all the rest of my actual points. Believe it or not, you wouldn't be the only very tall person to ever use crew kit - for most systems your own generic brand-less trousers and top can be turned into anything with enough Fantasy Bling.

I have no idea why I'm trying to persuade you, though. God knows we are not a hobby sorely in need of more arrogant border-line autists with no off-switch.

It may be a lazy cliché to you, but it is an omnipresent fallacy that affects every aspect of my life. I'm sorry if you're tired of being reminded of it too, because I most certainly fucking am.

I simply meant that if you turn up to a crew a game, the refs and other crew will put together bits and pieces that create the right effect, whatever size you are. Most systems can't afford fitted costumes for each crew member, and wouldn't buy them if they could, so it's instead done by accessorising over generic sloppy clothes that you provide yourself - in that way it is "one size fits all" and I've seen it work for many people of extreme size (normally horizontal, admittedly, but I have crewed with a guy over 7ft tall) but I know how important being special is to you and would hate to take that away.

Yes, doing a job where people have to listen to you is the same as always having to be the victim, well observed.

Centre of attention =/= victim.

Bad day today, PK? You're not normally this much of a bell-end.

Great day Shal, just a bit sick of your oppressed victim bullshit, but I guess it's my fault - I should know how this works by now.

In case you're not sure what happened in this thread is:
You said that you couldn't get into LRP because you can't afford it.
I pointed out some ways that many skint people I know, including myself when I was unemployed for over a year, use to keep the price low.
You said that it wouldn't work because you're too tall.
I explained how your size wouldn't be an issue at all.
You ignored me and kept playing the poor victim again.

If you want to keep finding excuses for not doing things you'll always be able to, but do yourself a favour and accept that you're doing that - the constant tiny violin is getting fucking old.

ALL VIOLINS ARE TINY WHEN YOU'RE MY SIZE.

Okay, that made me laugh. It changes nothing, but being funny will ALWAYS earn you points back.

It has the cover of Island of the Undead, which was a pain in the arse of a book I never completed.

The absolutely killing I have made on eBay over the last couple of weeks is almost entirely courtesy of my former employers at Games Workshop. Stuff I was given for free going for £31? A bag of spare parts from my bits box fetching £16? Yes please.

Games Workshop may have pissed off a lot of long-time hobbyists by ceasing production of metal miniatures and discontinuing their component-ordering service, but it now means that I have - or rather had - several boxes that effectively contain money rather than tat I was just too much of a hoarder to throw away.

I was about to quip that it would be Varg's favourite game, then saw the link to ancestralcult.com. That little tinker, he gets everywhere.
