1. Er no, I haven't.

2. No, he isn't. There is nothing good about them whatsoever.

Ptolemaic Egyptian who spent a long time living in Japan and, most recently, Spain. It's not his fault, though - you know what accent you're getting when you hire Sean Connery.

Wasn't Leonardo DiCaprio trying to do an Irish-ish accent in Gangs of New York?
His attempt at Rhodesian in Blood Diamond is really funny.

Also...

I saw an earlier episode of the Simpsons the other day, I think it was from the second series, and was astounded at just how bad Willie's accent was - I mean, it's never good, but his Season 2 accent makes the accent in later series sound like Robert Carlyle in Trainspotting.

Scottish accents are surely second only to Irish in terms of Yanks thinking they're automatically hilarious, and yet utterly failing to sound remotely accurate. Worst offender: Mike Myers (who is not even American and so should know better).

Good thread - I never understood why the fuck these supposedly talented and definitely trained actors with access to shit loads of resources cant just nail it.

I have never, ever understood why they don't just get someone who has that accent. Even if it's because you need star power and MUST have an A-list name, there are plenty of famous British or Irish actors.

Shite Irish accents (some mentioned previously):

Sean Bean in Patriot Games & The Field
John Hurt in The Field
Miranda Richardson in The Crying Game
Julia Roberts in Mary Reilly & Michael Collins
Alan Rickman & Aidan Quinn in Michael Collins
Kevin Spacey in Ordinary Decent Criminal
Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman in Far And Away
Tommy Lee Jones and Lloyd Bridges in Blown Away
Richard Gere in The Jackal
Brad Pitt in The Devil's Own & Snatch
Dan Hildebrand in Deadwood
Sean Connery in Darby Cunt O'Gill Cunt And Cunt The Cunt Little Cunt People & The Untouchables
James Cromwell in L.A. Confidential
Warwick Davies in The Leprechaun
Practically everyone in Gangs Of New York

Out of those, the only one I would disagree with is James Cromwell. It isn't perfect but it's definitely the best of that bunch.
It's also unfair to criticize Sean Connery. Surely everyone should know by now that all the accents in the world are Scottish.

Also, is Idris Elba an Englishman, an American, or an Englishman coached by Americans? I only ask because after watching Pacific Rim, Prometheus, and half an episode of Luther, I honestly can't tell.

So, Irish board members, has there ever been a time that a non-Mick has done a convincing Irish accent?

Spiny, Elba is from London, his accent keeps swapping between British and Seppo in Pacific Rim, he even does it in interviews. I suppose he's lived in the US a long time. A friend of a friend was the love interest bloke in the first Hellboy, playing a Yank. He even spoke in an American accent when speaking to my friend on the phone and it was filmed in Prague.

Well, he has Irish blood, but Daniel Day Lewis obviously.

Its fucking awful. There isn't a single Irish accent that sounds like that. As I said, surely he wasn't even supposed to be Irish born, so it was completely unnecessary anyway.

Its not just the accents, it's the pointless and often wrong cliches that are shoehorned in show the audience the character has Irish blood, even when it has no real bearing on the story. If their name is Kelly or Murphy or O Reilly, then they are obviously of Irish decent, there is no need for begorrah, top of the morning to you, to be sure to be sure, shamrocks, whiskey, or massacred versions of words like sláinte. Not to mention "corned beef and cabbage". Even if a film is otherwise decent I find it hard to watch when they ladle that blarney on.

I hate that quaint auld Dub shite that some people find absolutely charming. David Kelly can fuck off although I suppose he has technically fucked off by dying.

Here's an example of the worst film ever made and featuring the worst Irish accent by an English theatre actor.
