Hermes in Futurama always bugged me. He's a shit character anyway, but his stupid 'Caribbean' accent that doesn't sound like he's from anywhere in the Caribbean, let alone a specific part of it, is annoying at best and, when they give him stupid fake Rasta things to say, basically racist at worst.

Fisher Stevens in Short Circuit & Short Circuit 2 seems quite racist as well...

Oh, and the guy who played Johnny Rotten in 'Sid & Nancy' for using a scouse accent...

How about James Coburn's incredibly authentic Australian accent in The Great Escape?

Yes! Fucking hell, I rewatched these recently and I can't believe I hadn't realised at the time. "Mister Johnny 5, that is velly velly good, goodness gracious me!".

Although the word Hindu originally just meant "Indian", these days it's used to describe a religion, not an ethnicity or nationality.

I don't think Apu's accent is that horrendous. There was an article about the character in the National Hindu Students' Forum magazine a few years ago about how he's a relatively good portrayal of a Hindu, given that he introduces people who've never heard of the religion to it. Penny-pinching Indian convenience store owner cliches notwithstanding, apparently.

There definitely seems to be an "if you're on telly or in fillums without personally handing over actual documentation of Irish authenticity beforehand then you're absolutely not proper Irish and I will hate you forever" vibe going on.

To be sure.

What the fuck are you on about? That's not the case at all.

Okay, the first part I actually picked up on elsewhere so I stand corrected and have edited accordingly, but the second part stands.

Christ, even David Kelly stakes a battering on here!

I was jokingly referring to the large amount of shit Irish accents being focussed on here while drawing attention to another, not whatever Spiny just said. Christ Spiny, first the Giant Robots and now the Micks - who next?

The following is not an example of a bad Irish accent. Rather an example of bad acting which just happens to be delivered in an Irish accent.
I give you Pierce Prosnan in Taffin.

Wow, like Ray Winstone having a seizure.

Almost as bad as the animation. I don't know why they bother with these "photo real" CGI films, the characters always look shit.

How about good accents? I've always assumed that the Spinal Tap guys did a good job. How was Renee in Bridget Jones?

I used to have a huge crush on Asia Argento, so much so that I watched her vanity project/borderline softcore Porn film Scarlet Diva, which is mostly in Italian and French but whenever there's a scene with English speaking character she puts on this bizarre American accent, the whole film is on youtube if you have an hour and a half to waste.

Another film she directed/starred in which she does a terrible American accent

When it says "Based on a true story" at the beginning, they mean based on a novel by JT LeRoy so it's actually horseshit. Sadly it's not even entertaining in a bad film way like Scarlet Diva, it's just bad.

You may also remember Asia Argento's terrible American accent from Land Of The Dead and her slightly more convincing Russian accent in XXX.

I haven't seen ST for about 20 years, I only discovered they were all Seppos years later. So, yes. I've only seen the trailers for Bridget Jones but I assumed she was English on that basis, so I suppose she did a good job too.

Post Re: Actors and their terrible terrible accents
The critical ears on this forum with this topic always interests me as it seems like there is a lot of nitpicking going on. I'll stand up for "Gangs of New York" because so many of the accents done there were meant to be a sort of undocumented hybrid of where the people came from and what America was becoming. Lewis is the obvious champ here. He basically created an accent that no one had ever done before. Dicaprio was pretty convincing as a boy who came over and was raised in New York City. Another sort of cross over accent.

One other example in a recent film was the dude who played Bard in the Hobbit flicks. There was a lot of talk here about "what the fuck kind of accent is he supposed to be doing", when in actuality, he was using his own voice. They decided to use his natural accent, some strain of Welsh if memory serves. Looking for something to get riled up about, perhaps?

We did an interview with a guy named Russel Knox on our little tv show today and for the life of me, I just couldn't place him. He's from Scotland, but damned if I've ever heard such an accent. The point being, the criticisms here seem to be that these actors are trying to do something very specific that could be identified and I think that's taking away some artistic liberty.

Here's a little piece on Knox. You'll hear what I'm sayin', and yes, we ALL know that "Metal to Metal" isn't QUITE right.
