8. Porridge
9. Fall & Rise Of Reginald Perrin

Never got the appeal of Hancock, Perrin or Rising Damp. I love FT, Dad's Army and Yes, Minister. Used to love Blackadder but it feels very dated now and The Young Ones felt dated the first time I saw it in the early 90s, I like the ideas though. I like Steptoe and Porridge but was never that into either of them.

Everything about Ed's last post is completely correct. Dee's right about Python standing on the shoulders of Spike Milligan (something they were always very open about), but Ed is still absolutely right.

I know that Spike Milligan was a very funny man - one of my favourite books as a kid was a book of his poems and assorted waffles about animals (e.g., "Arctic elephants are just like African elephants, except colder. It's true. Try touching one."), but I've not seen that programme, I'll have a look for it.

Off the top of my head, in no order, stuff I like.

Only Fools and Horses
IT Crowd
Peep Show
The Inbetweeners
Phoenix Nights
Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere
Gavin and Stacy
Fresh Meat
Alan Partridge (as a catch all term for the various things with him in)
Fawlty Towers
Blackadder
Porridge
Open All Hours
Friends
The Simpsons

I'm sure there's stuff I've forgotten, but that'll do for now.

Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere? Seriously?

I'll admit that Phoenix Nights was far better than I thought it had any right to be, though not Best Of Ever material, but the spin-off was appalling.

Fucking Gavin & Stacy can get fucked, too.

My Name Is Earl makes my fists twitch with anger until it's turned off (and not just because of my autism about the word Karma, either).

Oh aye, completely serious.
I don't know if it helped being northern and the right age at the right time, as it was massive at school, I remember everyone singing the theme tune in a French lesson once, but only lad had the balls to sing the word shit in front of a teacher, but it was really quotable, and I just thought generally funny. Some stuff I can imagine or see why others wouldn't like it, but I'm always taken aback when people don't like Peter Kay's stuff, I can't process someone not finding it funny.

As for Gavin and Stacey, have you watched it though or are you basing your opinion on a few clips from a few episodes out of context?

Peter Kay's stand-up is appalling, the worst lazy, nostalgic, lowest-common-denominator "old fashioned entertainer" bullshit around. He's the more Generic Northern equivalent of the shit Scouse comedians Liverpool still goes crazy for (though slightly less mawkishly sentimental and without the chip on his shoulder), and I've just got no time for it. Phoenix Nights, as I said, was actually far better than I expected it to be (the Das Boot pinball machine going off during a war veteran's funeral is a fantastic moment), but that was his one moment of quality for me.

No, never seen Gavin & Stacey, totally going off isolated clips and the fact that I hate the fat guy off it. I'm not ashamed.

I'm sorry, but I don't think we can be friends any more.

For me Gavin and Stacey works because it's plot driven, it's not a series of isolated episodes, everything follows on, and there's an actual story arc underneath the comedy. I, like yourself, had previously written it off without ever properly watching it. But my brother got into it and made me watch the first season, and I'll be honest I was completely won over despite going into it not wanting to like it.

Max and Paddy was alright, just not really a patch on Phoenix Nights. It's a long time since i've seen Peter Kay's standup but I remember enjoying it about 10 years ago, he's certainly much better than other observational comedians around at the minute such as John Bishop and Michael Mcintyre.
Gavin and Stacey is shit though.

Phoenix Nights is really good, even if you think you hate Peter Kay. It is very funny, despite his stupid fucking obsessions (aren't dwarves hilarious? Hey, remember Spit the Dog/Bullseye/other bullshit TV from the 70s? Wasn't that funny?) cropping up every so often.
