Post Antivirus gubbins
Is there a particular antivirus package/programme people would particularly recommend? I've used Kaspersky and it's fine but I just wondered if there's anything cheaper but just as good.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials since May 2012, it's free, and I've had no problems and it's detected/removed stuff, so I guess it works.

I use AVAST (2nd year now) it's free and no constant pop-ups, no problems.

Pay for AVG. It's been excellent and have had no problems whatsoever since paying for it, better than free AVG. It does blow its' own trumpet about everything it does, and could easily be making some of it up but have no reason to doubt it.

I have always used AVG free, fuck paying for it.
Bit more bloat than AVAST, but is better.
Microsoft Security (or Care) Essentials, is shit, it doesn't update the virus database often enough, and was active the one and only time I received a virus on a PC.

I've been using AVG free for about 3 years, it's the only antivirus I've had that's given me no problems whatsoever. Avast was atrocious, let a lot of stuff through. Kaspersky gave me too many false notices to be worth bothering with.

Who do you bank with Ed? I get a paid version of Kaspersky free with Barclays online banking.

Stat_Rad's fucking convict CD list malware is very clever and circumvents anti-virus, or so I read online.

On the anti-virus subject, I just got a new laptop. It comes with McAphee, but I've always used AVG and am perfectly happy with that.

Anyone think I should use the one on there, or shall I stick to what I know?

McAfee's rubbish, uninstall it immediately nd get AVG Free. Unless you do return it, as that might affect your warranty, the returns policy, etc.

I've installed AVG and am quickly running a scan. I think it'll be ok, so I won't return it (I've already uninstalled Office 13 free trial anyway).

Can I just leave McAfee on there, or is it wise to just uninstall? The lass still has Norton on her's, though she has AVG too, so is it worth me uninstalling that for her too? It does keep telling her it's turned off which is quite irritating.

I had Ccleaner on the last one, so I'll get that one again.

Cool, I'll uninstall McAfee if you are all assuring me that it's safe to do so.

Uninstall both, they'll conflict with AVG and cause problems, plus both are really, really shit and slow your system down to fuck. Whether they tell you they're inactive or whatever, they're still running in the background and will cause problems. Norton is, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst, least effective and most counterproductive program to be associated with Windows.

Ok, I'll get rid of it today then. I was happy enough with AVG on the old one anyway.

I used to have spyware doctor too, as it picked up a few bits AVG didn't, but it's no longer free. Any suggestions from folk for additional spyware and malware protection?

I've pretty much always used Kaspersky. Had a brief fling with Avast which is good, but especially for online banking Kaspersky's safe money is brilliant. It is expensive; but I've never yet had a virus get though it.

For any guys that do a lot of torrenting I recommend peer blocker. It's free to download; and it monitors the traffic on torrents and and notifies you know if anyone is using the torrent to get into your computer. You can then block that IP from having access. You can also use it to block background monitoring stuff from websites like Amazon etc.

I also use spybot as an addition Kaspersky for monitoring spybots and malware.

Kaspersky is a full antivirus which might not be what you want. Avast is free but again a full anti-virus.

For malware etc I use spybot and peer blocker (see above for details)
