Finished watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand the other night. What a fucking series! What a fucking finale!! :o

Bones carries on in it's own way. Always good quality but lacking any serious punch recently.

The new episode of Family guy has to be the worst one yet. 40 minutes long, half of it a crap story about Brian and Stewie trapped in a bank vault, the other half filled with seen-before and should've-been-left-on-the-cutting-room-floor-forever song and dance routines. When the highlight of the episode is Brian eating Stewie's poo, you know you've got problems.

Modern Family continues to impress. More people need to watch this show.

Going to give a new show called Happy Town a go this week. Looks like a Twin Peaks, killer in a nice, small town type of deal.

Passed the halfway point of Twin Peaks this morning. I already knew whodunnit, but the episode in which it all becomes clear is outstanding. Not sure where they go from here though.

To insanity and beyond.

How does Spartacus compare to Rome? I understand it's more violent, but is it actually good too?

I'm currently halfway through the first season of Six Feet Under, it is fucking outstanding. The perfect cure for that very specific depression that affects people who've already seen The Sopranos and The Wire, and wonder if it's all downhill from there.

Way downhill. Stick with it though, the last few episodes are great and the series finale is some of Lynch's best work ever.

It does take a bit of a nosedive but the characters are so strong, and by that point you love them, that it doesn't really matter that the plot starts to get more and more surreal.

The clips I've seen make it look childish, gratuitous and banal next to Rome, but they may have been unfairly chosen. The gore, however, looks ridiculous - I watched it with my fiancee who's a total pussy, and she wasn't offended or bothered by the violence at all. She said it was "too computer-gamey" to be remotely disturbing.

Disagree - season two really starts to drag (I would say in relation to what but don't want to spoil it for steve). Lynch only pulls it together once he knew the show was being axed.

And Fhil, if you think the last episode is his best work you need to go back to school!

I don't bother with Season 2 of Twin Peaks. It has some great moments, but overall isn't worth ruining the name of the fantastic first series with.

It's quite different to Rome in some aspects but very similar in others and as much as I loved Spartacus, if I had to compare them both, Rome was definitely the better show. Spartacus is just different.
For a start, it's made by the people who produced Xena and Hercules so you've got Kiwi accents to contend with, a less talented array of actors and lower production values than HBO. That's not selling it very well but really, once you get over the computer game CGI (which is only really noticeable in scenery shots) the rest of the programme - pace, story and characters - easily make up for any visual shortcomings.
The real factor of whether you'll enjoy it or not is if you liked the style of 300. The fight scenes are gaudy, cartoonish and over the top just like that film, and even features the big black guy ("This is madness"!) as one of the supporting cast.

The long and short of it is this: If you like over the top gore and violence, unparallelled levels of nudity and swearing (Hearing John Hannah saying things like "He fucks my arse with his Thracian cock" never gets old) with a tiny sprinkling of actual history among the blood, tits and corpses then you'll love it.
If not, there's always Last of the Summer Wine.

There are still a few walkers about, maybe less than there was before the murders though.

I'd say that was a given.

Ha! Can't offer much in the way of gigs though I'm afraid, apart from Anihilated ( remember them? ) playing in June.

Yeah, aren't the tickets only a fiver or something?
Sounds like a good night actually. A pint, some metal and a filthy crackwhore.

I'll pass, then.

Does the swearing work, though? I know I've mentioned it before, but I thnk the swearing in Rome (and Deadwood) is an essential part of the atmosphere of those shows, and turns them into something very different and more powerful. The clips I saw of Spartacus made it look as though the swearing was just there to be naughty, rather than as an essential part of the atmosphere.

I've just watched the first episode of I Hit It With My Axe, which is basically a hairdresser, a stripper, and a bunch of porn stars playing Dungeons and Dragons. And features Sasha Grey.

Shameless finished it's present run last night.
This series has been the best for ages and everything was going brilliantly until the last fifteen minutes when a combined attack of writer's block and crass stupidity seemed to grip the scriptwriters. Getting rid of a key character is never easy but does every series have to end with a death these days? The subplot was just as bad, adding some cack-handed, mistimed comic "relief" to the main story.
A great series marred by it's climax.
