€20 for the BR or €2 for the DVD. Next time, Blu Ray, next time...

I'm on my third copy (VHS, standard DVD, this one - actually my fourth if you count taping it off the telly) and will probably pick up the BR if it drops in price a bit. Mainly got this one for the commentary. Great film indeed.

I think my first DVD was The Others, incidentally. First Blu Ray was Skyfall (BR?DVD combo - actually cheaper than the DVD on its own and I didn't have a BR player at the time), first VHS was either Anthrax: Oidivnikufesin or An American Werewolf In London.

Nah, just the director. There's a Crowe interview but I don't know when it's from. The BR is a 20th anniversary edition, maybe on that. I get the impression that Crowe's distanced himself from it, probably due to the subject matter.

My mate was an extra in that film.

I get that impression too. He never talks about it anymore.

The area where most of the film was shot (Footscray) is currently being gentrified. Most of the locations look quite different now, so the film is an interesting time capsule for those of us who live and grew up in Melbourne. It used to be a pretty rough part of town. There are even more Asians living there now than there were in the early 90's when the film was made, much to the chagrin of the Hando's of this world! ;)

We tend to follow the US in regards to micro politics, but our culture isn't as extreme which means that we generally avoid the excesses of those movements stateside.

A mate spent some time in Melbourne, got mugged in the station at the start of the film. Wallet, cigarettes and lighter, though the asshole took pity and gave/lit one back to him. Even the scumbags were polite...

Amusing story, but it really was a dangerous place back then Sol, especially at night. Used to hear many stories about stabbings and/or beatings that happened there. The station was rebuilt 4-5 or so years ago and there is now plenty of security, so there aren't as many violent incidents.

Yeah, he felt lucky to have gotten away so lightly. The guy had a knife, he'd heard the stories and thought he was a goner. This would have been '98/'99 or thereabouts.

It was still pretty bad back then, definitely. It didn't really start cleaning up until the late 00's or so.

I used to date a girl who lived out there back in the late 90s. I hated waiting at the station at night and used to worry myself sick about her getting home safetly ("Call me as soon as you get home" etc).

He did a song about the guy who played Davey, as he'd killed himself before the film came out. Poor fucker.
