Ashes and Diamonds was one of those films that I fully appreciate, but felt a bit to obscure for me to fully get into. I think the socio-political situation is a big part of that film, and a lot of it went over my head. There are some stunning scenes in there though.
Where does belief come into it? I watched it, didn't fully understand it but it looked lovely. I'm not really sure what you're alluding to.
You don't need to understand the particulars of Poland's situation at that time to make sense of the film. Only a small amount of knowledge is necessary.
I don't know much at all, but I responded to the way Wadja captured the sense of disorientation and confusion people at that time may have felt. He did this mostly through formal means, through the use of the camera and the use of space. The historical setting is just the backdrop.
With films like that, the _how_ is more important than the _what_.

^^Interesting. I just bought that on e-bay last week because I lost my cd that I purchased in 1991. I lost it years ago actually but never replaced it. Could never find it new for a decent price.

I'm still not sure where my (or any) belief comes into it?
I get what you're saying, but I definitely felt disconnected from the film. Largely because I didn't really grasp who everyone was, what they stood for, what they were doing etc. Half the film just felt like Maciek stood in a bar waiting. Ultimately the film is a political drama, and whether or not certain elements of film making and composition transcend that make no difference; the core of the film is rooted in post-war polish politics. In not understanding that I (whether consciously or otherwise) struggled with my immersion, and remaining 'in the zone' (for want of a better phrase) and struggled to really get my teeth into it. Scenes in the ruins, or with the fireworks, or with the poetry etc, they are transcendent and I was able to fully appreciate them, but they are only small parts of a bigger whole.
You can disagree if you like, but don't go telling me I'm wrong about how I feel and how I interpret and enjoy what I see.

That your feeling of disconnect comes from your lack of awareness of the political situation. I'd say it came from focusing too much on that and not on the use of form.

That's part of the style, what it wants to get across. You are meant to be somewhat confused.

It is a political drama on the surface yes, but unlike Hollywood films like Lincoln and Darkest Hour, it's mostly told through symbols, so you don't need an extensive knowledge of the situation to grasp it.

In the post = things I received in the mail.
Recent purchases = things I bought in stores.
I rarely mix them up

Amazon have decided to not ship packages to Australia after July 1 because they don't want to comply with our new complicated tax laws regarding imports. This means I have to order as much stuff now while I still can. Here is what I received today:
