Post Mind fucking numbers and huge cockcarpeting planets!
I watched a programme about Pluto last night.
Did you know there is a probe on it's way to visit Pluto?
Because Pluto has an eliptical orbit, they have to get to it soon or it will be too far away for the next 200 years.
Anyway, they've sent this fucking thing off at 45,000 miles an hour.
It got to the moon in 6 hours, so how long do you think it will take to get to Pluto?
Go on have a guess.
I'll give you a clue, we're talking YEARS.

9 years.
9 fucking years!
That's ludicrous!

Also did you know, we don't have any decent photos of Pluto yet. The Hubble space telescope only managed some really shit pixelly shots.

The probe is due to get to Pluto in 2015.

2015 is only five years away Mali.

Teasing aside, yeah it's incredible the distance away Pluto is. Makes your head hurt trying to fathom how big space is. Plus, space is apparently expanding, so what's it expanding into?!?

One I used to say when teaching was the fact that the sun is 93million miles away, but it's so hot it can burn your skin on a summer day. Mad!

Every time something super scientific like this or the big helium bubble or the Hadron collider comes up I'm reminded of that bit in one of the Austin Powers films, where Austin asks Basil Exposition what'll happen if he meets his ancestors and somehow ends up changing the course of history to the extent that his birth just doesn't happen.

"I suggest you just don't worry about it" replies Basil, before turning to the camera. "And I suggest you don't worry about it either."

It was a DVD, made...4 years ago, I guess!
Yeah, but if someone tells you Pluto is 2.66 billion miles from Earth, but it's too big to get your head around. I think saying the moon is six hours away at 45,000 miles and hour and Pluto is 9 years away, gives it some perspective.

I'd love it if, as we the probe gets closer and takes new photos the darker pixels in the centre slowly resolve themselves into the word "BUM".

Or if Pluto actually looked like that, made up of little squares, that would be supercool.

This is the thing about space, the things in it are so damn big that our experiences in our daily lives are inadequate by themselves to allow us to comprehend what happens with extremities of distance, velocity or size.

Space is not just expanding, depending on your local velocity or acceleration you experience distance and time differently from someone who is, relative to you, either at rest or at a different velocity. The amazing thing is, you can see why this is the case by first accepting that the speed of light in a vacuum is constant for all observers and then using pythagoras and a little fiddly algebra you end up with the Lorentz factor, which allows you to see the effect on time and space of travelling at massive speeds, and also is shows why we don't generally perceive this in our day to day lives.

I thought she looked like the head of the English department at a high school, though perhaps that says more about the school I went to than her..

The magnitude of this first term, g1, is so large that it is practically incomprehensible, even though the above display is relatively easy to comprehend. Even n, the mere number of towers in this formula for g1, is far greater than the number of Planck volumes (roughly 10^185 of them) into which one can imagine subdividing the observable universe. And after this first term, there still remain another 63 terms in the rapidly growing g sequence before Graham's number G = g64 is reached

No, it's bollocks, and Gene knows it.

First time watching National Geographic and Discovery Channel, Mali? :P

Space is big, but the expanding idea is just one of the many theories about what is happening to the universe.
