Better Off Kid: loved it as a kid, find it kind of annoying as an adult. The concept is good but the direction is not, and there are far too many musical montages. I get that it was the 80's, but they went overboard here. Cusack is amiable enough and the cast is likeable too, but it just isn't funny enough. 5/10. Maybe 4.5

I really enjoyed it when I saw it last year, but lets be honest it's definitely my sort of thing haha

It seems like a compromised film to me. The wackier elements seem to just draw attention to the conventional nature of the story, that's why I'm surprised it has a reputation for being an oddball film. It doesn't have the full courage of its convictions.

Finally got round to watching this last night.

It was the one exploitation genre I thought couldn't be revived in our current cultural climate, so it was good to see someone have a stab at it. Reviews were bad but it pissed off Mark Kermode so that gave me hope. Aaaaand.......it was rubbish. :(

I thought the premise of having a bunch of do-gooding eco-warriors get devoured by the savages they think they're helping was great! But it fell short in almost every area - chiefly the lack of gore! There just wasn't enough graphic chopping, hacking, slicing and general cannibalism. What gore it had was pretty good in fairness and the natives make-up and outfits looked cool. But, the atmosphere really lacked in comparison to the films it was paying tribute to. The music was forgettable. No gratuitous nudity. The main antagonist doesn't get torn to shreds horribly and eaten like he should have been (sequel?). Nonsensical ending. Overall a missed opportunity.

Looks like the Escape From New York remake is finally going ahead. Robert Rodriguez will direct: http://deadline.com/2017/03/robert-rodriguez-escape-from-new-york-director-1202051424/#respond

Hope it is closer to the tone of the book than the camp TV film

Looks decent alright. Wasn't a fan of the miniseries but I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Hopefully the gap between parts won't be overly long.

It's a studio horror based on old material so my expectations aren't overly high.

Yep, second dependant on first being a success, which it will be, the book is still highly regarded and crosses generations of fans, plus it's rated R so is not skimping out.

HUH?!?!?!?

It looks TERRIBLE.

Like a fucking Netflix run of the mill "horror" fluff piece.

In which parallel universe is something like that "incredible"?!?!?!

Looks like they've taken NO risks and done NOTHING interesting with it other than give modern day cineplex buttfucks exactly what they expect from modern day "horror".

Color me surprised if I turn out to be wrong.

As I said, it's a studio horror so it's probably going to be average at best. That's the nature of studio horrors. They are all craft, no art.

Somehow I ended up with a Peter Berg/Marky Mark double bill. Last I knew Peter Berg was directed things like Battleship, now he is turning into the movie based on a true story of the month.

Deepwater Horizon
Honestly, take out the special effects which is probably where all the money went, this should have been a direct to TV film. It is full of all the usual cliches and completely lacks any real empathy with the characters. They talk, rig explodes, some survive. The end.

Patriots Day
Definitely the better of the two but berg gets credit for sticking to the facts including casting lookalikes for the real life people (except marky mark). But, perhaps by sticking so rigidly to the facts it comes across as a bit flat. This is a director painting by numbers and it just lacks something to elevate it beyond average. Appreciate the ending, using interviews with the real life people.

Autopsy of Jane Doe
Frankly with a title like that I avoided until reading in Empire that it was a decent film so thought i would give it a try. Set pretty much in a morgue with the autopsy going on and a minimal cast it builds suspense and whilst not entirely original it is worth a watch. Could have used a better title though

Blair Witch remake
utter, utter gash.
