Shutter Island for the first time last night.
3 fists.
Probably would have given it 4 if I watched it when it came out.

Watched the live-action Ghost In The Shell last night. Better than I'd expected, but hardly essential. Not a patch on the anime, obviously. Spiny summed it up best: sexy Robocop.

Just watched Mad Max: Fury Road: Black & Chrome Edition. Apart from it not actually being exclusively in black and white (the swamp section is almost pink hued), it's an utterly pointless exercise. I know it was a reward to Miller for the various nominations and awards it picked up, but just cut the man a cheque. It's in no way, shape or form superior to the proper version.

Brawl In Cell Block 99: An overlong first act almost spoils what is a pretty cool character driven exploitation homage. The fights are brutal and Vince Vaughn is surprisingly convincing as a quietish thug. 3.5/5

Hellraiser: Judgement.

Does anyone still care about Hellraiser at this point? Dimension Films seems to think so as they unleash the tenth Hellraiser movie upon us. Once again, there's no Doug Bradley as Pinhead but at least the guy playing him this time round isn't as bad as the cunt from the previous one. The story - which is a bit crap - has two police officers looking for a serial killer amid some decent scenes of Pinhead and his cronies doing what they kind of did in the first two movies - hang around in the shadows and send a few hooks on chains out to clean shit up. Easily the best Hellraiser movie in a while, although that's not saying much.

Two Fists (loses one fist due to a massive waste of potential)

It doesn't look too bad, surprisingly.

Not sure how much longer Dimension will be able to hold on to the rights given what has happened recently.

Hopefully we'll see a legitimate moderately budgeted reboot soon.

If we do, I'm hoping it's got proper links to the Hellraiser mythos and isn't a random story with Hellraiser elements tacked on at the last minute.

Barker's reboot script is practically a remake of his original film apparently.

Might come in handy, as good as the first movie is, it's really showing it's age now.

Is that from the first film? I thought it was the second.

I haven't seen either for a while, I confess. I though that was from the scene where the wall in the mental hospital opens up and she's running through the corridors.

Nah, this beastie wasn't in the second movie.

The second movie had Kenneth Cranham as a mad doctor who turns into a Cenobite that spouts cheesy one-liners.

Oh I remember that alright. I'll bet he had a headache.

Have you seen the Leviathan documentary. Worth a look, if overlong.

I rewatched it a couple of years back, and I'd forgotten that stupid fucking thing. It fucked the rest of the movie for me. It got me thinking were we really so hard up for horror movies that this seemed good?

I quite liked that monster until I realised you could see the skateboard they balanced it on.

Apologies if there's any crossover with the other review but I wrote this a couple of weeks ago and really couldn't be arsed to rewrite it.

Hellraiser Judgment

Okay, so this is Hellraiser 10 if you're keeping count, and with tiresome inevitability, it immediately becomes yet another utterly pointless addition to the should-have-been-put-out-of-its-misery-years-ago franchise.

This latest chapter features a different (and predictably inferior) Pinhead, some truly appalling dialogue/acting, and pretty much like every other entry after Part 4, is basically just another Seven style detective story with bits nicked from Hostel, and some cenobites chucked in at the end. All with the tediously depressing promise of even more disappointing and worthless instalments to come.

Some nice boobs though tbf.
