Saw it last year. Better than The Shallows.
It was released under the title of In The Deep.

I think I'd rather stick a needle in my eye than ever watch a "found footage" horror again.

I'll probably watch this one because, well... you know. Sharks.
But otherwise, yeah. Pretty much. There was going to be a found footage Friday the 13th film this year but thankfully it was scrapped..

Been listening to the audiobook. Knew nothing of the final outcome, so it held me right to the end. 4/5

^ Watched it yet? It's a definite step down from Machine Girl. Maximum weirdness and fetishised girls of course, but the special effects and CGI are pretty sore on the eyes.

WU GONG ZHOU
aka Centipede Horror
(1982)

Image

A revenge-seeking wizard disguised as a street vendor curses a young woman wearing a magic amulet to death by centipedes. After centipedes start crawling out of her body, her brother and his girlfriend enlist the help of someone called "King of Centipedes" but he really isn't much use and disappears for most of the film without actually doing anything apart from telling them to go and ask other people.

Trying to get to the bottom of the multi-legged mystery, the couple observe a bizarre religious ritual which involves slow motion chicken plucking and decapitation, a priest (aided by two very helpful and invisible ghost children) banging two big bones together, stamping a naked girl with ink and then watching her vomit live scorpions. A second ritual follows later, but that one features lots of sword waving, a wizard-seeking fireball, people bashing cymbals together, gurning into the camera, and throwing bells in the air.
Oh, and there are five dancing ghost chickens.

Eventually, we discover that the evil wizard is actually reasonably justified in his anger, as it turns out the girl he killed with the magic necklace was the daughter of a second wizard who had an affair with bad wizard's wife before accidentally killing both her and his own wife before burning down the house and killing bad wizard's baby.
Or something like that anyway.

Anyway, it all ends up with the good guy's girlfriend being possessed by the bad wizard and vomiting live centipedes all over the floor.

As you would expect from a cheap 1982 Hong Kong horror film, it's all rather laughable, with ludicrous situations, terrible dialogue, and actors waiting for their cues on camera. However, the centipedes are seriously creepy, as they're all very real and very alive when vomited. Walls, floors, and people are covered with the menacing little myriapods and it's all rather hideous, even if the loud, fake skittering sounds are a little too much.

2 Fists

Saw Humoresque (1946) and Possessed (1947) lately. Joan Crawford seemed to be a good actress. I especially liked her mental performance in the latter.

I've stalled a bit with Kieslowski. I have 3 shorts, and 3 TV movies to go, and I can't get motivated. The longest of them is only 80 mins, so not exactly hard to find the time.

Instead I've basically been watching Pokemon films, I've managed 7 of them so far.

I also watched The Glass Key which is a decent enough noir. Not top tier by any stretch, but a very charismatic Alan Ladd makes it worth your time.

I like Kieslwoski a lot, but sometimes I feel he is a little overrated, even if he did make two of my favourite films of the 90's (The Double Life of Veronique and Three Colours Red)

I know what you mean. I find a lot of the time it's an interesting concept, but that it doesn't necessarily translate to an interesting film. I think a lot of it is to do with the sociopolitical context of 70's Poland and how intertwined that is with a lot of his work. A film like Blind Chance for example was largely lost on me, even though on paper it's a really interesting idea. I'm sure if I was more clued up, or Polish it might resonate more with me, but as it stands it just left me feeling a bit cold and like I'd been at arms length for most of the film.

Blind Chance isn't as highly rated as his later films though.

I agree that the politics can make you feel like you are in the dark, but to me the film making just isn't as interesting as what came later.

There are plenty of films with political allusions that I don't fully get yet I otherwise appreciate.

The disadvantage that younger cinephiles like you have is that you are engaging with his legacy, as an all time great director of the medium, whereas I started watching his films when he was still alive, so my expectations weren't as high.

In other news, David Lynch is done with film:
