Post Re: Forgotten Movies Which Are Ace
Badlands seems like his least forgotten to me. It's certainly the only one I've caught at the cinema. I also feel like it's one of the few of his that seem unanimously liked too.

I'd make a case for The New World being his forgotten masterpiece. Though I'd say that film divides opinion perhaps more than any other. I was hoping in light of the Revenant more people would seek it out, but I'm not seeing any real evidence of that. Both Lubezki cinematography, both Jack Fisk set design, both shot with natural light, both predominantly set outdoors, both about early American history. I love it, but I'm sure Stat and Sol in here both dislike it.

Malick has no 'forgotten' films.

I can think of a couple that should be, mind you...

None are forgot with me around to constantly remind you :p

But joking aside I do feel The New World tends to get overlooked. It came after the comeback, but before the 'masterpiece'. It wasn't well received at the time. I never see it for sale anywhere. Whereas most HMV and Fopp I go to tend to have the rest.

I'm sure in the right company it isn't forgotten, but it's certainly not one that many people bring up when discussing him, and certainly not in comparison to his others.

Criterion have received an absolute shitload of requests to release The New World over the years. It might not be talked about as much as his early work, but there are many huge fans of that film and it made a lot of best-of lists last decade.

I honestly don't think it's underrated or overlooked at all, unless you think it's the best film made so far this century! :D

The New World (as with all Malick films) looked utterly brilliant. It was a fucking slog, though.

I'm not going to say if the century, but certainly of its decade. I'm going to throw in the disclaimer that the 00's are probably my least explored decades.

That said what stand out movies did come out in the 00's? (Genuine question, not a criticism of the decade)

I'd forgot about Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.
Watched it today, 5 fists.
