Post Re: Forgotten Movies Which Are Ace
I like Wilder but Stalag 17 never appealed to me.

Re: forgotten films. They tend to be made by directors who never reached canon status. I wouldn't call Duel a 'forgotten' film by any stretch and the same goes for the Bunuel one mentioned.

Bunuel is a canon Euro director. Some films are more discussed and praised than others, but Bunuel is Bunuel. His reputation in film as a whole is bigger than any one film. When it comes to celebrated auteurs like him, it's the body of work that matters. It is just a ranking game after that. E.g That Obscure Object Of Desire superior to The Phantom Of Liberty? (Yes it is).

Eureka put out a nice Blu Ray if Stalag 17 last summer. I've not got it myself, but I own a good few of their releases and they are probably the best quality releases I own, and all come with interesting bonus features and booklets.

Kids living in white trash American town "revolt" against the system that oppresses their emotional outlets. So they rampage and fuck shit up.

Stars a young Matt Dillon.

Inspired a young Harmony Korine.

Nice. A bit ridiculous, but a fun watch none the less.

The Exterminating Angel is canon. It is not a forgotten film. It is one of the quintessential bourgeois bashes. Sure the masses don't know but who gives a shit about them? They aren't the audience for that film.

Seriously man, you are just wrong about this and you need to accept it.

Herzog has a ton of films that barely got much of a release. His docos didn't get the wide releases that his features got back in the day as a general rule. They aren't 'forgotten', because in order to be forgotten people have to know about it.

Southern Comfort always gets overlooked for Deliverance, yet is a damn fine film in its own right.

I'd hardly say that's forgotten.

I really liked it at the time but having read Wolf Hall my view of More has changed somewhat.

The Big Red One

Excellent WWII pic following the exploits of the titular American First Infantry Division across Europe. Featuring Lee Marvin and a post-Star Wars Mark Hammill. The 'reconstruction' restores this heavily-cut film to its original glory. Highly recommended.

Of all Pálfi's stuff Hukkle is definitely the one that's more 'a filmmaker's film' if you know what I mean. It's a great experiment and manages to be successful with it, although I'm glad it's relatively short otherwise fatigue would have set in.

Sadly it's one that really benefits from a great presentation, so unless you're keen enough to have a good home setup / screening room it loses some of its finer detail.

Really good filmmaker Pálfi, and mixes up his approaches, so don't be afraid to dig out some of his other stuff even if Hukkle isn't for you. He's worth the time.

I have some patience for this sort of thing, but I didn't appreciate the dead cat.

The Professionals

Rip-roaring western action adventure which really should be more famous than it is. Brilliant cast, including the utterly gorgeous Claudia Cardinale looking like this...

Claudia Cardinale was sex on legs. One of many reasons to love Once Upon A Time In The West.

Anni: I'll look out for that Stalag 17 BR. Now that I'm earning again I think I owe it to myself to finally splash out on a Blu Ray player.

Myr: I'd never heard of it before chancing across it on a hungover Sunday afternoon channel surf about 20 years ago, and I haven't heard much about it since. I have yet to read Wolf Hall so don't have a particularly rounded opinion of More (I'm led to believe that he was somewhat of a prick) but the film as it is is a 5/5, no question. "Woman, mind your house!"

That's a great cast for The Professionals, and is that Woody Strode in the pic? Must look out for that, it's one I've heard of but never seen.

What are you talking about?

Image

^It's the Hungarian version of The Postman Always Rings Twice, and it's far better than any American one.

Image

^^This is provisional as I haven't seen it in well over a decade, but it really impressed me in the mid 90's, especially as it was directed by Rafal 'Screwballs' Zielinski. It got strong reviews but it faded quickly. It did get a video release in the UK through Tartan though.

^^Tommy Lee Jones' best performance.

The Professionals. You can tell from the way I mentioned The Professionals when I was talking about The Professionals.

That is the great Mr. Strode. And he's afforded a lot more character development in this than he usually got.

Sol, there's a double-header US Blu-Ray with Stalag 17 and The Dirty Dozen. I have it and it's ace. Multi-region.

Doesn't have the extras that are on Anni's BD, but it's a shite-sight cheaper and you get the awesome Dirty Dozen as well...

I think it deserves its status at the bottom of his filmography personally.
