Oh shit, I forgot about the Funny Games remake. That's his worst film for sure. I guess that almost doesn't 'count' for me since it was a remake he pretty much did for money and it didn't pan out. Unfortunately Tartan went down with it.

^^Sorry to hear that.

What's amazing to me is how bad it is compared to the original even though it's just a carbon copy with different actors.

Then again, there is a history of this sort of thing happening with Euro directors remaking their own thrillers in English. e.g The Vanishing, Nightwatch etc. But those films made drastic changes to their original plots, especially The Vanishing, whereas Funny Games did not.

I'm almost tempted to add this film to the list:

Image

^^It was praised at the time but you never hear about it anymore. It doesn't help that Beatty pulls lengthy disappearing acts.

I was also going to mention another Beatty film---The Parallax View--but that is pretty well regarded today by thriller buffs, especially fans of conspiracy thrillers.

More of the great Warren Oates...

Dillinger

Directed by John Milius. Enough said. Shits all over the Michael Mann/Johnny Depp fiasco, 'Public Enemies' from a height.

Yes I do. Inexplicably, as I have no interest in surfing whatsoever.

Brilliant stuff with Orson Welles as a 'is-he-or-isn't-he-a-Nazi' who arrives in a small American town. Cheap as chips on DVD. Needs a restoration.

Two Irish films that really need more attention...

The Field

Image
Immense psycholgical drama set it the South Wesht. Richard Harris' best film role.

Michael Collins

Image

Very impressive biopic of the Irish revolutionary hero. Warners would appear to hate this film given their treatment of it on DVD .

Hang on a sec, there was a Nightwatch remake? Are we talking about the Timur Bekmambetov film?

Cracking film, I was going to mention that, Three Days Of The Condor and The Eiger Sanction, but I think they're all still well thought of, especially TDOTC.

^^Tommy Lee Jones' best performance.

Agreed, I'd completely forgotten about that. perfect choice for the role.

Sol, there's a double-header US Blu-Ray with Stalag 17 and The Dirty Dozen. I have it and it's ace. Multi-region.

Doesn't have the extras that are on Anni's BD, but it's a shite-sight cheaper and you get the awesome Dirty Dozen as well...

Tempting (I've never seen The Dirty Dozen) but I'm a sucker for bonus features & extras. Would ultimately depend on whether it's a decent transfer, though.

Thirded, great film. I still wince at the knife/crotch scene.

Agreed, another glaring omission from my collection.

I fucking hate that film, it really 'Hollywood' simplified the events of the time way too much. Plus it has Julia Roberts in it, which is never a plus. Neeson was good in the role, though.

A submission:

Image

Cracking Irish crime comedy which inexplicably took 14 years to get a DVD release. Some of the acting's a bit ropey but it's tremendous fun and pissed on the likes of Intermission (which came out a few years later, and would have been much better if they could have managed to get the three sisters to speak in the same fucking accent).

Despite our disagreement over Michael Collins (I enjoyed it), Sol and I would appear to be on 'the same page' with a lot of this stuff. And, Sol, the transfers on Stalag/Dirty Dozen are great.

No. I was referring to the Danish thriller from 1994 that was remade in 1997 with Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte.

I'd say The Eiger Sanction has been forgotten.

Absolutely brilliant. The book was declared "unfilmable", so they made a film anyway, and even if it doesn't follow Kurt Vonnegut's non-chronological narrative to the letter, it sticks to the spirit.

There were some independent films from the nineties that seem to have disappeared from collective memory. I haven't seem them in years so they might not be as good as I remember:

Metropolitan(1990)
Barcelona (1994)
Love and Human Remains (1993)
Amateur (1994)

I was literally looking into that yesterday morning. What an odd coincidence.

Criterion released Metropolitan years ago, but Stillman checked out for 13 years after Last Days Of Disco, which didn't help keep his films in circulation.

Hartley definitely dropped off as well. His films got worse and quite honestly, he was never that good in the first place. He seemed good mostly due to timing.
