I just saw on wikipedia that Stillman is now making a new film

Amateur was the anomaly for hartley, a lot darker than normal and the only one of his I liked

Sad to say, but I'm not sure John Waters is as remembered as he should be. His older films never made it to blu ray (considering the qualitythat might be a good thing) and though Hairspray remains his greatest hit he still did films like Pecker, Cry Baby, Cecil B Demented, Low Dirty Shame that are fading from memory in the masses.

He is still a cult figure, but it is strange how poorly represented he has been in the dvd and blu-ray era.

You hit the nail on the head, his status as a cult figure seems to be disconnected from people actually wanting to watch his movies. I know he does more stand up talks now and i wonder if he will ever make another movie. Still, as a fanboy it is disappointing i still have to watch piss poor dvd versions. At least i have the uncut version of Pink Flamingoes

I was just about to mention this. I might put the DVD on today as I've fuck all else to do.

Hang on a sec, there was a Nightwatch remake? Are we talking about the Timur Bekmambetov film?.

No. I was referring to the Danish thriller from 1994 that was remade in 1997 with Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte.

Ah right.

I didn't know they'd filmed Slaughterhouse 5, I must look for it. I enjoyed the book a lot (much more than Catch-22, which I read the same week).

I'm also with you on Michael Collins. I thought it was a bloody lame film. Didn't like Rob Roy either.

Rob Roy had its moments but was pretty average overall. I like Neeson as an actor but fuck me does he appear in some shit films.

The Henry Winkler/Michael Keatin Night Shift is the best one.

I don't rate him. He is too hammy for me. I'm surprised that he is taken so seriously.

At first it shocked me that he decided to move into action films, but that's precisely where he belongs.

Oh, I dunno. Nowadays he's going for the easy money, sure but have a look at films like The Big Man or Lamb. Even his small part in The Mission impressed me.

No, but it's hardly a forgotten movie. Unless it's regarded as a cult film, is it? Great watch either way.

Yeah it's pretty much canon now. Maybe in 1990 it was a little forgotten, but once Malick made his comeback in the late 90's his films never really left public consciousness, at least not in cinephile circles anyway.

If Malick didn't come back in 1999 with Thin Red Line I doubt his 70's films would be talked about all that much nowadays, at least outside of the context of New Hollywood anyway, and even then he didn't really fit into that whole 'movement'. Badlands was really his only New Hollywood film.

What's 'in' and 'out' is largely dictated by trends and fashion anyway.

Santa Sangre - Jodorowsy 1989

Generally overlooked in favour of films like El Topo and Holy Mountain which have a greater cult following.

Not as good as either of those films but still not without its own charm. If yr into that kind of thing, that is.
