Hmmm. I'm a Primordial fan, but that is fairly uninspiring, tbh.

As expected, it's crap. Blatant Anathema rip-off.

I haven't listened to any Anathema beyond Serenades, and it didn't sound anything like that

You're not missing much, TBH. Give Pentecost III a listen, that's fantastic (and pisses on The Silent bloody Enigma, which is one of the most boring and overrated albums I've ever heard), and some of their next few albums are listenable but the last few I've heard have had less impact than fucking Coldplay.

The new Primordial song is bland for sure. I hope this doesn't end their run. They have been very consistent since 2005.

Fucking hate Primordial. I can't understand what people see in them at all.

Truth. Pentecost is fucking brilliant. Only Darren White is real.

Nothing wrong with that new Primordial song. Sounds fine to me

I think 'fine' is about as good as it gets for that song. But I'm not sure fine is quite good enough when it comes to Primordial.

That was kinda my point: Technically, there's nothing wrong with that song, but it doesn't really have anything special about it either, which is what's wrong with it. It's disappointing for a band who have been very consistent for a long time.

...and no: "fine" is not good enough for Primordial.

Good points. I liked the song, though I'm not too sure if it is one I would release as a lead single. I'm thinking/hoping it will go down really well within the context of the album as a whole.

Compared to the new Machine Head it's almost genius.

I wouldn't know about the new Machine Head as I haven't listened to any of the pre-release singles. I'll probably give the album a go when it is released.

Right. Seeing as its release is fairly soon, I've finally been given the all clear to speak about the new Machine Head in more detail (the label have been coming down on everyone about this one).

I've had the full album for a few weeks now, and I have come to the conclusion that listening to it comes in three identifiable stages.

STAGE 1

This is the first stage of the new Machine Head album experience, whereupon listening to it, you will find yourself either pulling this face:

This face:

Or this face:

Or, very likely, all of those faces at once.

STAGE 2

After a few listens (and you may congratulate yourself if you get this far), you might actually find a few of the songs have grown on you a bit, and maybe aren't as bad as you first thought.
There's not many of them, they're not great, they're nowhere near as good as classic MH songs, but they're not terrible.

This kind of face:

STAGE 3

This is the stage where you've given it every chance, have probably realised it's not awful, and acknowledge that, although there might not be any great tracks, there are actually some fairly reasonable ones, and even a couple of valid (if misguided) attempts at experimentation, but in the end you come to the inevitable conclusion that you'll probably never listen to it again as long as you live.

Sort of like this face:

Image

The truth is, that although it's fairly terrible, there are some good moments on there. Skip through the first three minutes of shitty intro, and a further two minutes of some utterly awful vocals, and 'Heavy Lies the Crown' actually turns into a belter of a song. If you remove some of the shit lyrics* from 'Razorblade Smile' then that one's actually very good too. The title track isn't bad, and even Bastards grows on you in a quirky, could-have-been-a-great-B-side kind of way.

But ultimately, a smattering of decent riffs, solos, and breakdowns, and four passable songs out of fifteen is not a good return for your cash. No matter how fancy the inevitable limited edition versions might be.

*every single word in the entire fucking song.

1.5 Fists
Maybe 2 if I was feeling generous.
