For me AIC need those wall of guitars for their tunes to really work. I was never totally convinced by that Unplugged album.

I couldn't disagree more: if you only listen to AIC for the heaviness, you are missing out a large part of what makes them so good.

^^THe heaviness and the harmonies are what makes their sound. The harmonies to me don't sound as strong without the heavy guitars. They aren't Bee Gees or The Beach Boys. They aren't that melodically rich. They have a droning quality to them.

NIirvana works in a stripped down setting because their melodies are more direct.

Agreed. With the exception of 'Sludge Factory' and maybe 'Would?', all the tracks work quite well, especially the tracks pulled from 'Sap' and 'Jar of Flies' (obviously, as they most closely resemble the original versions). Staley and Cantrell's voice are just as haunting (maybe even more so on tracks like 'Frogs' and 'Nutshell') even without all the guitar noise.

I have to admit that I agree with Stat on this one. The acoustic EPs never appealed to me as much as most of the electric material. I've always felt that the druggy Sabbath-influenced dirges were what AIC did best. Don't get me wrong. I do still like the acoustic stuff. In fact I like everything AIC have ever released. But it's the heavier stuff that represents the fullest realisation of their sound in my opinion.

I don't fuckin' like 'em even when they do plug in their guitars.

But on the real tho, as far as the heavy Sabbath-influenced dirges with those vocal harmonies go, I kind of feel like AIC went completely that way on the last album much to it's detriment. Not much variation there and to be honest I have a tough time sitting through that whole album. They very rarely stray from that formula. Even disregarding their more subdued, 'acoustic' albums, even 'Dirt' had 'Rooster' and 'Down In A Hole' which are highlights of that album and translated very well on the 'Unplugged'.

At any rate, I think 'Jar Of Flies' is probably my favourite AIC album. If tracks like 'Nutshell' or 'No Excuses' or 'I Stay Away' or 'Rotten Apple' or 'Don't Follow', which pretty much deviate from the heavy dirges, if they don't get you, you have a heart of stone.
