Oh, sorry, I wasn't aware there were right albums to listen to :D

Mental Vortex is probably up there with No More Colour as my preferred Coroner album. I know the former is too mid-paced and perhaps too clinical sounding for some people's taste. As time has gone by I've developed a soft spot for Grin just because of how much of a left turn it was for the group, and how alien it sounds.

Individual Thought Patterns is not usually the first Death album I pull off the shelf - to be honest it is probably one of the least - but I just wanted to go back to it. Surprisingly, the mix, which I have been pretty critical of in the past, actually wasn't too much of a hindrance to me (I think I have most likely compared it to Symbolic which is one of my favourite death metal production jobs for how natural it sounds, and the amount of separation between instruments, though that could be due to the direction Chuck was heading in anyway).

It was basically a mix of their first 3 albums. The songwriting wasn't quite as strong, generally speaking, but it was a solid and welcome return. Do you like their 'alternative period'? I know a lot of their fans don't. I really like At The End of the Day.

Yeah, that's how I remember it being, I was just happy to hear them again. I only own the first three albums, so I'm not really that familiar with their latter stuff (and it seems pretty rare nowadays). Maybe I'll check it out on Spotify sometime?

By the way, you heard the new Deftones yet?

I've heard the first two tracks they released (the opener and the closer), but I haven't listened to the rest. I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail with a swag of other stuff, so I'm going to reserve my judgement until then.

Mental Vortex is alright, but I can't really get into it.

Individual Thought Patterns is quite a mess imo. It should also have been called Chuck Schuldiner's diary...because that is what it essentially comes down to.

Trying to finish my review for this thing.

Just put this on. I actually remember really liking this opening track, 'In The Clouds', a nice build up to open the album. Just looking at the tracklist, the only other two I recall are 'Zombies' and 'Next Joke'.

Actually, 'Eternal Masquerade' just started, and I remember it quite well. I have a feeling a lot of this will be familiar as I did give it a fair listen when it came out. I quite like the production here.

I like these new death metal bands that have some sort of originality going on.

 I haven't heard that BS album in its entirely even, but I'm not sure if it's comparable. Problem with Triptykon to me is that you can only get so dark with dark atmosphere if your guitars don't do too much! Considering Tommy Warriory had a thing for innovative riffs in the mid-80s that so many bands were influenced by, it's kinda sad to see him play this kind of doom/gothic metal stuff with very stand out riffs to boot. But hey, at least it's better than Monotheist so that's a start! :D

Tonight's playlist

Really enjoy this album. Far more streamlined than their previous releases, and a lot less noisy (even compared to their more accomplished late-80s material), but still with the same kind of inventiveness you'd expect.

Image

Absolutely rubbish cover, but the music is solid (except for the very dated - read: 90s - sounding reggae songs). I know this album cops a lot because H.R. is not singing on it, but Israel Joseph I does a more than adequate impersonation (and honestly, H.R. has not outdone this in the following years). I feel this is underappreciated by the diehards, though it is obviously far removed from their hardcore roots.

Image

Perhaps there is a theme emerging here of underappreciated releases, because the third album from Kings X probably fits that mould as well. Some really solid tunes.
