''Light Up the Sky'' sounds like an 80's metal track.

One of my favourite non-metal releases of the last decade.

Working my way back through the Wolverine catalogue. Still really enjoy these.

It's been awhile between drinks with this album. So dark and oppressive, and still a monolith. I still tend to favour Souls At Zero, but my only main criticism of this album would be that it is long (70 minutes) and draining (although maybe that is the affect it should have on you), and the first two thirds you can't really get much better.

Their definite peak, and the conclusion of an astounding trilogy of albums. For me, they began with Souls (the earlier material might as well have been from a different band, it's so basic by comparison) and, for all intents and purposes, ended with TSIB. Once they went with Albini, all life was drained out of their sound but here, they were all force and feeling. Saw them touring this album (supporting Entombed) and they were simply jawdropping. Now, I wouldn't cross the road to see them play.

Always thought Gillan sounded goofy and out of place on this album, which is a shame because there's some good riffs appearing here, too.

Yeah, the Billy Anderson produced albums definitely have a certain atmosphere to them that the Albini-produced albums lack. I do really like some of them though, and I'd probably take A Sun That Never Sets and The Eye of Every Storm over Enemy of the Sun if I'm being honest. I think after ...Storm I lost interest in them - that album at least had something unique to offer - but it feels like they fell into a solid albeit predictably comfy songwriting and sonic style.

Today's playlist:

Baroness - Purple

I've really had a problem with Gillan on this album, just more so the production and that they were probably short a couple more decent tunes - 'Hot Line' and 'Keep It Warm' are a bit forgettable, and I've never really liked 'Digital Bitch'. Add the interludes and that's pretty much half the LP right there. I do really like the other tracks though. 'Zero the Hero' and the title track I really rate, and 'Trashed' is a fun tune. As for the production, that 80s drum sound is really pronounced, and it's so trebly and piercing. It's strange as it was only a bit over a year after Mob Rules, which is really solid and still sounds pretty good to me.

They wrote some of their best material after 1996. You can argue about the production, but The Eye of Every Storm is brilliant. Powerful as hell. Their last was their best in a while too. They still have juice left in the tank, but they aren't as innovative as they once were, nor should we expect them to be.
