Give it long enough and BrokenCYDE will be classic. Don't forget how those bm "classics" were received by most at the time.

Bollocks, Arch Enemy are fucking terrible for the most part, and even if they weren't you may as well be comparing Garth Brooks to Johnny Cash.

Even in Amott's musical history, Arch Enemy are the runt of the litter.

The ten seconds he spent working with a below par Candlemass > Arch Enemy

Fair point well made.

No one hated Arch Enemy until they got popular - fact.

I dont hate them, I just dont like them, and I never did, even before they were popular, but that said their popularity is a complete mystery to me, they lack personality and they are fucking boring. Compared to Amotts other work, with Carnage, Carcass and even Spiritual Beggars, they are a very weak mediocre band.

Perfect for the great uneducated mainstream then?

Black Earth is a great album and Bury Me An Angel a classic choon.

This. I bought Black Earth when it came out because it made Nick Terry explode in a shower of jizz, and it was just dull. Not bad, certainly, but nothing remotely interesting. I heard a few tracks from their other albums, and they did nothing for me either. The closest I've been to liking them was actually their first album with Angela, which sounded much fresher and sharper than their previous stuff, but was over-long and ultimately had no staying power.

I didn't know them before they got popular. They're shit regardless of popularity.

I'd choose modern day over yesterday because I wasn't there and have not got the emotional attachment, just like it's vice versa for the old DM fans. Good exists nowadays as well as back then.

Now fucking stop it. My massive mod ego is getting inflamed....

what is interesting is how the bad from back then is now seen as good, but hey, times change. I find it hard to detach the emotional attachment to those early albums cause I don't want to be one of those who think all good DM came out before 199_.

I think you have to listen to modern DM with the expectation it is all about technical brutality, you can't distinguish one song from the next, but then surely that's true of grind or noise where it ceases to be about knowing individual tracks intimately (when you know how the next song will start before its started) and more about the sound/sonic experience.

Most? Have you done a census?

Via my own perusal of a lot of what constitues modern DM. It comes across quite clearly in the sound. When I hear something that sounds right but feels wrong it's pretty much always the yungins trying to figure out what the genre is all about.

As soon as you put limits on a genre then that's bad. Annotations Of An Autopsy will probably keep groing bigger and bigger. They've already got ego's the size of Jupiter (And a frontman the size of Jupiter too, arf arf).

They were better when they had a sense of humour at the shit they were pedaling instead of following JFAC and going all srs business. Gore Gore Gadget is a tune, and the cunts never play it anymore.

I couldn't do that - I got into metal around 1999/2000 and there were loads of new bands coming out then. I struggled to get into any of them and although I wasn't even alive when some of the classics were released I feel more of an affinity with old albums/bands than I ever could for newer stuff.

I'm not much of a pukka DM fan, but I'd take Entombed over Hate Eternal anyday. HE have no songs. Ever. It's just a freakshow. Look how fast we are, listen to our bass drums.... and yeah it impressed me for a few minutes, but ultimately.....no.
