Against, Roorback, A-Lex, Kairos - all better than the Nu-Metal cash-in that was Roots. Produced by Ross Robinson and containing collaborations with Jon Davis and DJ Lethal amid some one-finger-one-string riffs. It was the start of Max's creative decline - at least until latter-day Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy helped put proper Max-Metal back out there, but they're hardly essential.

Also:

Fear Factory - Moment Of Impact (4) from Transgression (1).
Machine Head - Crashing Around You and Bulldozer (4) from Supercharger (1).

I did consider mentioning that album, though I would have gone with 'Moment of Impact' which ends the record. By far the most agressive track on a surprisingly subdued effort.

Have you heard the latest Seputura album? To me it's the best Derrick Green era album yet. And ALL of them are better than Roots.

I have. It's atrocious, 1/5 at best. The Green albums are shit. Not Bestial Devastation or Morbid Visions shit, but still very poor.

The Green-era Sepultura is certainly not groundbreaking like the group's early work - though I do think that people have done a lot of revised history with the importance of 'Morbid Visions'/'Bestial Devastation', as if they are as important as Bathory and Hellhammer in the development of black metal.

They are very workmanlike, but solid without ever being truly spectacular. But that kind of consistency is difficult for a group 30+ years into their life, so I can only commend them for that.

Also, I have noticed that some people will defend 3 or 4 tracks off the last Morbid Angel album. I've never really listened to it, but I feel there may be a contender on it.

Machine Messiah? Yeah, I've heard that one. It's very good, but I still reckon A-Lex is the best of the Greene-era.

The last one is better than Machine Messiah to me, but their last 4 have been very good.

Roots was the last stylistically cohesive Seps album, but I'm not entirely convinced that it is the last musically worthwhile one.

As for Supercharger, I don't think there are any 4 fists songs on there but then I dont think it is a 1 fist album or even a 2 fist one.

I always thought Morbid Visions/Bestial Devestation were a bit crap, mainly due to two factors: A band still developing it's style and shit recording and production facilities. Schitzophrenia was a (big) step in the right direction.

First thing they did worth listening to, and my go-to Sepultura album these days.

Ironic that Sol says that Cosmic is 'wrong about Maiden', then proceeds to rate Hell Awaits 2 fists.

Easily a 5 fist song. 'Presence' is probably a 2 fist at worst, but I don't think it's too shabby next to 'In Through the Out Door' which is a 2 fist at best (but that feels generous) and there aren't really any 4 or 5 fist songs on that for mine.

Paradise Lost - Over the Madness

Borefest of album (I can't believe this is what certain people consider to be a comeback) but this track is surprisingly good. Greg slays with his solo on it, too. Funny how this track appears at the very end of the album though.

I've always liked Carouselambra off ...Out Door. Trippy as all hell.
