I found it very heartfelt, personally. I did think it reminded me of Iced Earth though.

I wasn’t too impressed with it the first couple of listens, but it definitely grew on me the next few. I’ve never checked out Iced Earth so I can’t comment on that

Imagine if Ripper had been singing for JP since the 70s. ;)

^^

You can really tell that Priest put everything into this album. They spent a lot of time, money and effort to get it right, and it has that classic Priest energy/feeling behind it all, even if the songs generally don't scale the heights of their best work.

I'll give them 5 fists for effort, 4 for the actual result.

If they split up soon, they will go out with a bang.

The album's growing on me more with each listen. Definitely their best since Painkiller, as much as I liked AOR.

Read today it's their highest charting album ever. Straight in at number 5.

They probably only needed to sell 300 copies, mind you...

Thought I would post this here in case anyone was interested. They do talk briefly about 'Firepower'.

Not too many surprises, but I am surprised by how much the 70s period is overlooked considering how important and influential it was to heavy metal as a whole. I know 'Painkiller' is very much the '' choice as far as go-to Priest album goes due to it being a bit more modern and faux-extreme, but god damn, it is still as patchy as the majority of their other albums.

'Firepower' is very solid though. Probably on par with 'Angel of Retribution' for mine. It ticks boxes (which is satisfying) without ever hitting the peaks that a great album should have, but it's still to be commended for it's consistency regardless. I am a bit surprised by the amount of people losing their shit about it as if it were another great Priest reinvention, though in saying that I can appreciate the fact that they are getting to that point much like Sabbath and Maiden over the last couple of years where we shouldn't take them for granted and celebrate everything they have managed to accomplished, even that at this stage of their careers.

70's priest is my favourite by a mile, sad wings and sin after sin are both perfect.

The reaction to this album seems more genuine than the initial response to Redeemer of Souls, which was generally overly positive outside of this forum.

No doubt the fact that it could be their last album factors into the hype, but I also believe that many people, including myself, have been really taken back by the unexpected quality of this album.

Is it classic? No, but that isn't really the point in 2018. It's a really solid album from a classic metal band who haven't been this good since 1990.

That's enough.

I haven't heard the new album in its entirely yet, but ''No Surrender'' is a fucking great song - it sounds surprisingly convincing for a band this far in their career.

Yeah the album just oozes conviction. I'm still hooked on it.

It also makes a case for why Halford really is the best metal vocalist. His sense of phrasing just can't be beat. Dickinson isn't even close. He is one dimensional in comparison. Halford uses his voice so dynamically and he has a superior sense of rhythm and brilliant control of tone.

Just listen to the opening verse of Lightning Strikes. Who else could have made that ridiculous verse (on paper) work?

I also love how through his career Halford rolls his r's to great dramatic effect.
