Different styles. I just prefer Smith's.

Smith is too calculated, to precise. Murray just goes off on a blues driven improv. It's amazing!

Murray chucked me a cigarette once. 8-)
I was stood on the barrier at the Wolves Civic in 1996 and he had a fag in the headstock of his guitar. I motioned for him to flick me it, which he duly did. I caught it perfectly but the prick next to me decided he wanted it aswell and I was left holding the filter and half an inch of cigarette.
Murray chuckled and walked off.

I really only break this down into categories:

Those who can play anything:
John Pettrucci

Innovators:
Vai
Hendrix
and I can't believe nobody has mentioned Ron Jarzombek

Players with identifiable style that I really respond to:
Devin Townsend
Vogg
Ivar Bjornson
Ihsahn

Back to Jarzombek. The dude is at the top of my list because he is a witch. He has invented/discovered so much in the ways of his instrument that nobody else has even attempted. His speed is ungodly and he is untouchable when it comes to high speed timing.

This.

Although Smith is the better songwriter.

Can we at least agree that they're both better than Janick?

Well, yes, they are both better than Janick, but I like Janick. A lot of people seem to think he shouldn't be in Iron Maiden now that Smith / Murray are back on track. But that's bollcocks. He stepped up to the mark when Smith left and is a good entertainer (although his songwriting credits don't match the other two). I like the guy and I'm glad he is still with the band.

Apart from anything else, Steve Harris actually wanted three guitarists in the early days of Maiden...

Such is my ignorance on latter day Maiden, but do they really use the three guitarists or would two suffice? There aren't too many bands I can think of that utilized three, particularly in metal.

Same here, I'm more interested in how the drums sound than the guitars

No, they do genuinely use 3 and in the main are quite inventive and clever with it - it allows either a rhythm track when there's a twin harmony, or a 'chug' and a melody under a lead, for all 3 create a churny rhythm/heavy sound by playing chords-bits their own style, or a counter rhythm under a solo or even from time to time 3 part harmonys

Ok, my top top top of all time is 1. Adrian Smith.

The rest of my list (in no particular order) includes mainly guitarists who were/are distinctive, creative and played in bands I liked. I could end up putting 100's down here, but think that dilutes the point. Going for a Top 10

2. Dave Murray (can't have Smith/Murray without /Murray)
3. Kirk Hammett (yeh, I know there was some debate about his quality on another thread, but he writes solos that suit the song, take it to the next level and that you can remember and sing along to when pissed... oh, and The Unforgiven solo rules)
4. James HetfieldRiff/rhythm guitar king. I always played rhythm, never lead and he is my guitar idol. Also to sing with some of the off-beat rhythms of his riffs... Playing and singing Harvester of Sorrow I always found a nightmare!
5. Eric Peterson Riff/rhythm guitar prince
6. George Emmanuel III (aka... answers on a postcard...) INCREDIBLY distinctive

Honourable mentions for -

7. John Sykes
8. Michael Weikath Nuff said
9. The dude in Sentenced who's ALL OVER Amok... Love it!
10. James Murphy
Oh, and my mate Lee... what?! He's awesome!

He is precise, but not in a clinical unemotional way. He is also melodic, inventive, instantly recognizable, and all of his solos are hugely memorable. I think he is every bit as good as Murray, just a different style. Murray is like Hendrix meets Schenker, bluesy but fluid. Agreed that Smith is the better songwriter.

One person I must add, who is more than deserving and I can't believe I forgot him  -

ROSS THE BOSS!

My favourite guitarist is Geordie Walker. Ultra minimal playing that provides eerie wailing discords like distress signals from another planet, and when the time comes to rock out, he can make one guitar sound like a thousand.

Second choice is the heavily Geordie influenced Tommy Victor; there is no other player in metal who sounds so precise, fierce and cutting.

Third choice is Buzz Osborne; he could be playing a Wet Wet Wet cover and it would still sound like a bulldozer from hell.

Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers could, in his prime, play like Hendrix if he had a mind to.

Insert tradtional "It's alright, little mate, we've thought that about you for ages" comment here.

They could send two of them home and I'm not sure anyone would notice.

Disagree, so much so I'm going to quote myself to argue with you
