I've got a copy of "Blood On Ice" which I like to play when training at the gym and IMO, it's a really good album. I've also heard a song called 'Under The Runes' (Which may or may not be about the Waffen SS) which is excellent as well, so by the sounds of things I'd probably be bang into the Viking-era of Bathory.

I've also heard three songs off "Octagon" - they sounded rather crap.

Dunno about the rest though. Is it worth it?

Lumme, if you like Blood on Ice then you will cream your pants for Twilight and Hammerheart, and probably Blood Fire Death. As for Octagon, yes that is a steaming turd of an album...
The first three are classics but a totally different proposition, pure Black Thrash, with some epic tendencies, particularly on Under the Sign.

Today I listened to Requiem, Octagon and Destroyer of Worlds. They are certainly not great, but I reckon between all 3, there's actually an albums worth of great material. There's plenty of stinkers too though.... and a song about ice hockey or something lol!

Also listened to Blood On Ice, which I think I now prefer to TOTG.... possibly....

Requiem's great, probably my favourite of theirs (or of his, I suppose).

Seriously? It's not shit, and it certainly doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the massive turdosity of Octagon, but I'm surprised anyone would say it's their favourite... it's a little 'backwards looking' for a start, and whereas up until that point Quorthon had been an innovator here he was reduced to aping Slayer. Quorthon said that people moaned about the Viking albums and they wanted another Thrash album, but the point is Bathory were good at the viking stuff, and their thrash stuff was only good of it's time (realistically).
There's two good songs on Destroyer, the first two, the rest is pretty meh. But nothing as shit as 'Immaculate Pinetree Road 930' or whatever the fuck it was called (and that was the best song on Octagon!).

Yep, seriously. It was the first album I heard (I'd heard the odd track here & there previously but didn't pay much heed as I was mainly into DM at the time) so it'll always have a special place in my heart. I can see why people prefer other Bathory 'sounds', be it the early BM albums or the 'viking' ones but I'll always go to Requiem first.

You can talk!

I kind of have a soft spot for Requiem, even though I know it's no match for the first six albums... it's just... 'War Supply' is just dying to be 'War Ensemble' isn't it?

War Machine, you mean?

Yeah, I know the preceding 3 have more to them, in terms of variety, experimentation and outright ability, but I prefer Requiem for its simplicity. Plus, as I said, it was the first time I heard Bathory properly and you know how it is with the first album you like by a band. The first 3/BM albums never did anything for me, to be honest.

I've changed my name once in four years, and not by choice. You, on the other hand, have had a fake ID called Drone From Uranus. I think I may win this one.

Bathory were my favourite band in the world for a few years around the late 80's/early 90's. Absolutely worshipped Quorthon! Lost interest after the horrible "Requiem" & "Octogon" albums though. Didn't give any of the later releases a listen for fear that they would further taint his legacy. Still listen to the first six albums regularly though. Such a huge part of my life to be honest.

You should check out the Nordland albums, they go back to the Blood Fire Death/Hammerheart sound.

When I first heard Blood Fire Death it was like listening to albums like Puppets, Reign In Blood, Scream Bloody Gore, Deicide etc. Hammerheart & Twilight are my favorite but I like all of them except Requiem & Octagon not too much.

Blood On Ice is a good solid 4 fists.

I'd say it's better than Twilight of the Gods but not Hammerheart.
