Post Warwound and other still not dead punks
I just noticed that this months edition has an article with a bloke I recognised as rat from varukers/discharge.

I gave them a listen out of mild curiosity and nostalgia as one of my teenage halcyon memories was of watching the varukers at a venue called purple haze (Peterborough I think, the journey there was practically odyssian in its epic danger levels) anyway back when I was 17 they were blisteringly good but in every occurance I have seen mr rat I have always thought the band I saw couldn't have been this talentless shouter. who knows?

I used to go to every gig I could and most of them were punk gigs, I saw broken bones more times than I can count and they had half of discharge as members at that point so they were bloody good but rat?

er no.

to quote my lords and saviours Napalm Death "punk is a rotting corpse"

I'm disappointed with the new Magrudergrind, it has gone down in my estimation after the initial buzz. I really liked these, I still do I guess, and loads of it is exactly what I wanted/expected, I like the vocalist for and he's on form..

But for a record that barely climbs past 20 minutes it has a crazy dragging feeling for the entire middle 3rd of the album. It all starts strong, but from a clumsy and very weak bit on tr.6 (only 5 minutes into the record...), I just noticed unforgivably weak and unimaginative riffing irritating me in several parts of the following segment of the record. Aside from some very shit musical ideas, the departing of their original drummer is devastating for their sound as it was too. There are problems with the snare sound on this record as well, it doesn't sound very faithful/realistic or dynamic.

I'll make a fantastical case for these guys and other punk/grind/HC faves Trap Them to swap their new drummers over. I've seen both bands live in previous and new iterations, and they've both released records with the updated lineups now. With all of it, the new record and shows were well off, with a lack of gelling styles and incompatible energies. I mean, TT's Blissfucker was a total damp squib for me. I can't see this MG one having huge longevity as a whole record either, as the debut full length or the Crusher 10" has.

No real fault of the drummers per se, but I say this - TT have a super strained sound, and Brad Fickieson isn't raw enough. Too much skill & finesse and making it all sound very tight and easy, which affects the tension in the band's sound.

Magrudergrind were always streamlined and had a more clinical, zippy & athletic feel.. here Casey Moore is very raw, not fast or clean enough to hold up what they once did - with grind, we're not talking about a style of music which has a lot of room for idiosyncrasy to emerge, and they had it. Hotswap these guys like fuckin IT equipment and then tour together to cool it all out, sort it out.
