I'm going to Damnation, with three other mates. We're going to the warm-up show, too. I'm really looking forward to it, despite the line-up not being particularly great, for me. I've been enough to know it's going to be a good day any way, and I always end up finding interesting bands I've never seen before.

I'm certainly not expecting anyone to get close to Cult of Luna/Julie Christmas' monumental set of last year.

Before that, I've got Unsane at the Dome in London. Looking forward to that.

The line up is unusually strong for me this year. Last one I went to was when Electric Wizard and Pig Destroyer headlined it when I swore I'd not go again unless there were more bands I was interested in seeing.

Will be going to this on the 3rd. Hadn't heard of ThermiT, but was pleasantly surprised when I looked them up. They are actually a pretty decent heavy metal/thrash type band from Poland.

And there was me thinking you'd accidentally signed up to a meeting of the RMT union

Going to see if I can make it to this on Thursday, it does clash with Roadburn tickets going on sale, I'll just have to see how make times the server crashes
Image
According to See Tickets they still have received the physical tickets to post out, getting slightly worried as it's less than a week away now

Thy Art Is Murder, Fit for an Autopsy, Emmure, Justice for the Damned

Pretty keen on seeing thy art is murder and fit for an autopsy. Not massively into deathcore but I really enjoy those bands so far.

The Triffid, Brisbane, QLD, Australia - only $44 per ticket as well, so pretty happy about that.

Jesus fucking Christ, how much is an expensive gig then? I'm seeing Agoraphobic Nosebleed on Friday for £22, and that's on the pricier end of the gigs that I normally go to!

For medium size gigs, you're probably looking in the range of A$40-60. Bigger international acts in the larger venues I would say A$80-100, and then then you have your stadium gigs after that A$100+.

You do have to remember that Australia is really remote, even the cities here are far apart. We're looking at a country roughly the size of of the US with only 5 "major" cities, with 3 really only guaranteed major international acts (Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane), as opposed to the US which is over tenfold the market size. Western Europe is probably a comparable size to the US market as well, with everything within a relatively close distance (you can drive from London to Paris and back again in the time it takes to drive from Brisbane to Sydney for example). So naturally touring is going to cost more.

It's really just the tyranny of distance and isolation.

TL;DR Things cost shitloads more in Australia.

Jesus, no wonder so many of you immigrate

Funnily enough, a lot of my friends have migrated over from the UK and Ireland, and a few who have migrated over there, so I guess we kind of got a pretty good exchange program going on.

The general consensus they've conveyed to me is that whilst the costs of living in Aus is higher (apart from rent which is apparently comparable), the average wage here is considerably more as well.

As for the cost of gigs, I think that is why festivals became quite popular for a while here. You could see all your favourite bands sound shit in daylight, in 40 degree heat, surrounded by drunken louts. At least the relative cost of A$150 made it seem alright.

We're heading up to Leeds on Friday for Damnation. To say I'm excited would be putting it mildly.

I wouldn't say those costs are too dissimilar to the UK, once you factor in the exchange rate. $40 Aus, for example, equates to £23. We'd pay more than that at somewhere like Brixton. Camden Koko is usually around £25. The Cro-mags are £20 at the Underworld.
