Post Album Of The Year 2019
Seeing as blacklorre deleted his post...

Not sure if there's enough people still posting that'll bother with this but anyway...

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds: Ghosteen
Acid Reign: The Age Of Entitlement
Slomatics: Canyons
Chelsea Wolfe: Birth Of Violence
Konkhra: Alpha And The Omega
Geist: Swarming Season
Memoriam: Requiem For Mankind
Candlemass: The Door To Doom
Coroza: Chaliceburner

There's a few I need to catch up on but I enjoyed all of these, with the first three being my favourites this year.

Overkill's album was OK, didn't really grab me. Death Angel's was a disappointment, I much preferred the two or three previous albums. Earth's latest was as dull as dishwater, and Devin Townsend's was just a mess.

The Tool album has been the big (inevitable) disappointment, still a damp squib after multiple listens.

Post Re: Album Of The Year 2019
Never thought I'd see the day where Konkhra featured on anyone's best of year list! :D Still haven't heard the new Nick Cave, but I didn't like his last one.

Top 10 in alphabetical order:

BARONESS Gold & Grey
CANDLEMASS The Door to Doom
THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM South of Reality
FKA TWIGS Magdalene
MAYHEM Daemon
PATTON/VANNIER Corpse Flower
RAMMSTEIN Rammstein
SWANS Leaving Meaning
TOOL Fear Inoculum
SUNN Life Metal

^^That Patton is his best project in a LONG time. Was almost ready to give up on him. Regarding my overall list, there were no clear standouts this year except for maybe FKA Twigs and half of Swans. Standouts in terms of greatness. I don't think I heard an album this year that I would rate above a 4/5 or 8/10. Rammstein came back in a big way, releasing one of their very best albums, and Tool's album had moments of greatness. Mayhem also returned in surprisingly strong form. Wasn't expecting that. Wasn't expecting another album from Sean Lennon and Les Claypool either, but it's certainly superior to the last few Primus albums.

Honorable mentions: Opeth, Life of Agony, Dream Theater, Rotting Christ, Sacred Reich, Exhorder, Lindermann, Queensryche, Korn, Overkill.

Sacred Reich and Exhorder were also surprises. The first Exhorder song I heard was lousy, but the album itself is really quite good.

I didn't like the previous two, apart from a track or two between them but Ghosteen is a spectacular return to form. Very downbeat, practically an ambient album, very much informed by the losses in his life in the run up to it. I love it.

The Konkhra isn't spectaular at all, just mindless chugginess. I enjoyed it though. Didn't think much of the Sacred Reich album, but then I was never a fan anyway. Didn't bother with the Exhorder, the first song they released was crap and I wasn't a fan of their previous albums either.

10. Slipknot - We Are Not your kind

23. Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave
24. Exhorder - Mourn the Southern Skies
25. Batushka (real Batushka) - Panihida

WORST/BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

1. King 810 - Suicide King.
I know most people on here think they're shit anyway, but the drop in quality since the debut album has been shocking. Time to go.

2. Leprous - Pitfalls.
1980s Synthpop noodlings with one or two decent songs.

3. Batushka - Hospodi
Just listen to the other Batushka instead.

4. Xentrix - Bury the Pain
Safe and forgettable dad thrash.

5. Within Temptation - Resist
Sharon nearly quit due to burnout. You can tell.

6. L7 - Scatter the Rats.
Shouty, but outdated and painfully dull.

7. Dragonforce - Extreme Power Metal
Yeah, okay. If you say so.

8. Monolord - No Comfort
Everyone keeps telling me this band are awesome. If, by awesome, they mean "this band will make you want to turn them off after ten minutes and listen to Black Sabbath instead", then they are correct.

9. Sonata Arctica - Fuck, I don't know. Something Finnish with umlauts and shit.
Time to call it a day, lads. It's just getting sad now.

10. Rhapsody of Fire - The Eighth Mountain
Not terrible, just instantly forgettable.

Oh, and in a league entirely of it's own - Tool.
£100 for that load of shit. Fuck off.

Yeah, much better than the first one. Just as odd, but hangs together better.

^^I don't think it's as distinctive as the first one, musically or lyrically. I miss the English lyrics, which added a kind of mad camp element, but I do like it.

No room for Korn in your top 25? It is their best since Issues (or Untouchables).

My two albums of the year both came out in 2018, which renders them rather pointless, but still, they are:

DIR EN GRAY - The Insulated World
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM - The End of Chaos

Man, I'm glad if I can find a few cool albums per year at least. The ones from this year include:

Asphodelus - Stygian Dreams
Nightfell - Sanity Deranged
Vultures Vengeance - The Knightlore
Mefitis - Emberdawn

All 4/5 fists though!

Some albums that I'd still end up liking more than I do now would include Blood Incantation's Hidden History of the Human race and Undeath's Sentient Autolysis.

I can't say they are the best because I haven't bought a huge amount of new music this year, much to my shame, but here's a select few I really like:

- Cult of Luna: A Dawn to Fear
- Opeth: In Cauda Venenum
- Dream Theater: Distance Over Time
- Brutus: Nest
- Blood Incantation: Hidden History of the Human Race
- Whitechapel: The Valley

I have discovered some older stuff this year, of which the highlight is a band called Nux Vomica:

WASP - The Headless Children

Would have made it into a Top 30, along with Overkill and a few others.
