My friend met the (pre-Big Business line up) Melvins and had a few pints with them. Buzzo told various anecdotes, one of which was that when they were signed to a major, he was at the company offices one day and went to the gents. Stevie Wonder was there with a guy who was escorting him, Stevie was happily pissing against the wall believing it to be a urinal and his minder was pretending it wasn't happening. I don't believe it but it's a great story.

Trey Azagthoth, Pete Sandoval and Eric Rutan - Rutan and Sandoval were pretty quiet but very nice all the same. Azagthoth was surprisingly friendly and chipper, asked us about the set, how we felt about certain songs etc. Talked about guitarists for a bit. He was very short which surprised me.

a friend of mine met Trey outside of a 7-11 back in 1996 during the Australian Domination tour. He said he was an incredibly friendly guy. He also met Erik Rutan too, who was also quite nice apparently.

Max Cavalera - Was a lovely bloke. Showed genuine concern when he heard we had nowhere to stay, and just hung with us while he was waiting for his wife and kids.

Someone mentioned earlier that Max was kind of indifferent when they met him, but i've generally heard great reports about him. I know at least 5 people that have met him over the years, and they all had positive things to say. A good friend of mine interviewed him for the first Soulfly record back in 1998 and was kind of shocked by his humbleness, esp considering that he was at the very height of his popularity then.

Stuck Mojo - Really cool actually, bought us booze, talked about old metal and had a lark.

I would have met them if they toured Australia in the late 90's when they were supposed to--i had a contact at Century Media at the time--but unfortunately i never got the opportunity. I've heard good reports.

When I was still working for a gig organiser at metal gigs in Austria I met quite a few bands backstage, ran errands for them and took them around town for sightseeing tours and lunch. Also when I was writing for Nocturnal Hall and had a press pass I met a few bands.

The whole lot of Mayhem when Maniac was still the singer, Hellhammer was super friendly, the rest not so much.
Pete Taegtgren - such a nice and shy guy
the guys from Belphegor, several times. They are from Austria after all, and the scene isn't that big.
Alex Wank from Pungent Stench, super nice guy
Morbid Angel - went for lunch with them, very chatty guys
Samael - poor Masmiseim had a bad cold, had to get some medicine for him
was in contact with Sabathan from Enthroned for several years after meeting him at one of their gigs
Hammerfall - friendly, if shy guys
Ihsan from Emperor - again, nice and shy
the singer from Moonspell. He's tiny!
Dimmu Borgir before they got famous. Soooo shy and sweet.
Matt from Iced Earth when he still had his long hair - again, shy and really sweet.

still in contact with a few other ones. Generally: the more badass and evil their public personas are, the more shy and kind they are in real life... This does not go for Belphegor though :D they're just nuts. But I like them hehe

that was my experience exactly. Hellhammer is a really friendly guy. the rest were either indifferent or just plain dicks!

I gave Hellhammer a bunch of cd's to sign and the only one that interested him was the new Arcturus which i had just purchased that day. He really seemed eager to get some feedback on it because it was new. hehe.

I remember when I was 16 or 17 Helmuth from Belphegor faxed letters over to me - I was still living with my parents and my mum got worried when she saw all those pentagrams and upturned crosses on the faxes haha

A wee pal of mine once worked as a guitar roadie for Johnny Thunders-half his time was spent running about city centres trying to find herion for the man.
Johnny Thunders: one of the immortals.
Course he's dead now...

Post Re: Metal/Rockstars - who's met someone famous?
Arch Enemy and others - Thanks to a mate of mine (the bass player in Snuff) three of us got into the aftershow party at The Swedish Apocalypse show in Kentish Town a few years ago. Aswell as meeting The Haunted briefly (just a quick hello, barely even enough time to get a first impression), I ended up spending a lot of the night drinking with Herman from Dragonforce, and chatting to a couple of members of Dark Tranquillity.
Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates, but then of Nightrage) stood next to me at the urinal, smiled and said hello. Which was very nice and not at all gay.
On the way back from the toilets, infront of me there suddenly appeared to be a gauntlet of metal brothers to run. So, casually walking past them all, I nodded "Bjorlers", carried on a couple of paces, said "Erlandssons", before finally nodding approvingly and saying "Amotts".

After duly informing my mate (a MASSIVE Carcass fan) that Michael Amott had finally appeared in the building he went off on a mission to meet him. I followed.
All went well and we all had a very nice conversation about some stuff I can't remember and the usual "are Carcass going to reform?" bullshit to which he did amazingly well not to roll his eyes at but still avoided answering both pleasantly and expertly.
Later on that evening, after helping Herman build a rather large wall of Red Stripe cans, I realised my mate the Carcass fan had disappeared. No sign of him anywhere near the bar and he hadn't mentioned going for a piss.
Amott. Oh shit.
I caught up with him very drunkenly talking at the rather helpless looking guitarist who looked quite relieved at my far more sober presence. I arrived just in time to hear my mate utter these priceless words... "You. You're Michael Amott. You're Michael Amott!. Do you like ever wake up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and say, "Fuck! I'm Michael Amott!"?
The obviously confused guitarist replied with "Er, not really, no" before I made a hasty apology on behalf of my drunken chum and dragged him away as he slurred "That was Michael Amott, you know!"
He had a complete blackout of the night so I took great pleasure in reminding him of the gory details the next morning. To this day, he still goes bright red as he remembers making a total knob of himself infront of one of his heroes.

Other amusing things of note that evening.

Arch Enemy vocalist Angela Gossow is tiny. Really tiny. I put my arm all the way around her waist and still barely even touched her.

Arch Enemy bassist Sharlee D'Angelo is MASSIVE. After a brief chat with him, I was turning around to walk away just in time to notice a seemingly very angry Tomas Lindberg hurtling towards us, arms outstretched, before leaving the ground and hurling himself at the giant bass player. D'Angelo, so casually it was scary, caught the flying Swede and turned him upside down in one movement and banged his head onto the floor three or four times. I moved away a couple of paces and waited for the fireworks but D'Angelo turned Lindberg up the right way before engaging in the biggest girly hug I've ever seen two men give each other. Seems they were really close friends but hadn't seen each other in ages.

Later on, I saw Lindberg in the DJ's little anteroom to the side, playing air guitar completely on his own to Blinded By Fear. Which I found both a little strange and a little sad.

Also strange was watching virtually every single guitarist in the room suddenly stop what they were doing and start playing air guitar to the solo in Megadeth's Hangar 18. I chuckled. Then joined in.

Further proof that air guitar ist krieg.

As to all these people expressing surprise that singers tend to be short: Have you never noticed this before? It's really common. I've often wondered if it's a constructive manifestation of Short Man Syndrome. Off the top of my head, Martin Walkyier, Dio, Dani Filth, Blaze Bayley, and Rob Halford are all varying degrees of surprisingly tiny.

But didn't care that a grown man was faxing a 16 year old girl?

...and Udo Dirkschneider is the height of nonesense. Remember seeing them at Donnington '84 and this hellish scream errupted at the start of Fast as a Shark. Then this wee midget came out of nowhere. I think he was hiding in the bass drum or something.
But what a voice!
AC/DC were described by Dee Snider as being 'really short, but dead mean with it'.
I met Snider twice and he really was warm and genuine, and tall as a tree.

doubt she knew how old he was... when I was 14, in 1991, I had a penpal who was involved in all that black metal stuff, not only did he send me tons of tapes from the bands back then, he also told me various stories a 14 year old girl should probably not have heard. He was 27... to be fair, he didn't know how old I was. When I told him 2 years later my age he broke the contact off :( I still regret telling him that! I met him a few times since then.

Firstly - bastard.

Secondly, Skin from Skunk Anansie is another one. She was always placed right in the foreground of their album covers and I never really understood why until she came onstage at Wolverhampton in 1995 and she was about six inches tall.
Fucking scary little creature though.

Bizzare first encounter-was wandering the streets round about Paddington area in London 1983. There was the whole band walking down the other side of the street-it was a strange sight; they were all dressed in the gear they had on the Kids are Back single cover. Crossed over and spoke to them, mostly Snider. Sound guy.
I just wish they'd become as big and successful as they threatened to-could have been genuine metal legends.

Couple of the guys from Death Angel came back to Monty's house when Funeral Hag supported them. They were nice enough chaps, having previously given the impression of being knobs by sending a message ahead to say that none of the other bands could touch their equipment. One fuck up at the airport and their equipment went elsewhere, they soon changed their tune and borrowed our kit.

Possibly that was management being dicks though, as they did seem nice.

Met Nightwish at Bloodstock a few years back. Tuomas was very serious and Jukka was a miserable bastard, but the rest were brilliant, especially Tarja. A mate of mine had tried to embarrass me by pointing out a suspicious looking stain on the table and said it was made by me getting over excited. She laughed her tits off at that and even kissed me on the cheek after she stopped giggling. Jukka was next to her and did not look amused in the slightest.
Fuck off, drummer boy. I got to kiss your singer.

Robert Plant once bought me a pint in the bar of the Holiday Inn in Brum after a show on his first solo tour. His drummer, Ritchie Heyward, was a miserable prick.

I once had a 25 minute conversation about speedway with Lee Dorrian at a Spiritual Beggers gig.

Also flirted with Anneke Van Giersbergen for about 20 minutes following a gig by The Gathering a few years back.

Once helped Alabama Thunderpussy load their gear back into the van and had a hug from then singer Johnny Weils.

Sat and chatted with Jim Martin after a show on his post FNM solo tour.

Also had a few beers with Danny McCormack and members of his post-Wildhearts band The Yo-Yo's and was on first name terms with members of pop-metal band Anti Product.

Other musicians/band members I've met at signing sessions include Ozzy, NotB-era Maiden, Scorpions, Rory Gallagher, Ian Gillan, Rush, Michael Schenker, Saxon. There may be others but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
