Post Re: Overrated/Underrated
Some Finnish bands such as Funebre are underrated especially when compared to overrated dung like Demigod. As for more well known bands, I've never seen how Enslaved or Satyricon have every gotten as popular as they are.

Because they're better than other bands...

OVERRATED:

Burzum - Everything before Filosofem was average, everything after was worthless.

The Mars Volta - I love prog, but this is aimless, song-devoid "wacky for the sake of being wacky" overhyped shite. Turd, turd, turd.

Watain - Uber-generic paint-by-numbers irrelevant noise. Even the image is too cliche to taken as entertainment. Why they get touted as the saviours of BM when all they've done is beyond me.

Wolves In The Throne Room - everything that is wrong with USBM encapsulated in one band. Woefully boring self-concious attempts to imitate second wave BM in order to sound more "authentic" (unimaginative) , shit aimless riffs that go nowhere but dullsville, stupidly pretentious, badly thought out image, no, no, no...

Liturgy - Middle class trust fund hipster cunts pretending to be Burzum. Shite.

Alcest - To my ears it's just 3rd rate indie/post rock with some screams over the top of it. Yawn...

And now for it...

Your subjective, personal judgement based purely on aesthetic preferences is flat wrong. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is every bit as good as anyone ever claimed, and Ordo Ad Chao is much better than most people claim. To be fair, I can live without everything else.

^ Indeed. They're one of the very, very few Scando BM bands that actually aren't overrated.

Chantler speaks the truth about Mayhem. WLA & GDOW are all that's needed.

Live In Leipzig is their best album. And the song on GDOW that sounds like Solitude Aeturnus is all right.

Post Re: Overrated/Underrated
Every few years I try to give GDOW another go. The first few tracks always make me think "this is much better than I remember, why don't I like this?", but by about track four or five I've remembered. Great idea for an album, and I really want it to work, but I just don't think it does at all. Better than Chimera, though.

As I've mentioned before, once I cut out the silent sections (and that awful ringing/whine for 4 minutes) and recombined the unnecessarily split tracks, I found that it flowed much, much better than the way it's presented on the disc itself. Especially when I put WLA before it on a CD-R.

And the pre-gap?

I don't think you can rip a pre-gap track (I don't know how to, anyway) but, as it's just an album track played backwards, I wouldn't bother.

Plus pre-gaps are for cunts.

Is it!? I seem to remember it being better than most of the album.

Well nobody knows they're there, that's fun. I like the idea that you can have albums with songs on that you'll never know anything about. I only recently discovered that Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts has four bonus A and B sides before the album starts, that's exciting. And it's great that computers and more recent CD players can't access them.

Oh yeh, was going to ask you for a link for this, but forgot shortly after you mentioned it. If you wouldn't possibly mind doing the honours, please?
